Teener kills 72-year-old 'dog'
By Ruby P. Silubrico

IT IS, THEY say, always wise to look twice before jumping - or stabbing, as in the case of a 16-year-old boy who thought he stabbed dead Saturday night last week in Barangay Napnapan, Tigbauan, Iloilo, an "aswang" pretending to be a big dog.

It turned out, however, that Tranquilion Cabaso of the same barangay stabbed 72-year-old Guillerma Tasik, also of the same place.

Cabasa, who is now detained at the cell of the Tigbanuan Philippine National Police, still believes that what he killed was a flesh-eating "aswang," and not a human being.

Residents of the same place found Tasik, bathed in her own blood, at 7 p.m. along the river bank of Sitio Lanag.

She was brought to the Guimbal Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival because of her fatal stab wound in the abdomen.

The suspect, who was inside their house when policmen came for him, was immediately arrested after witnesses tagged him as the person who stabbed Tasik.

The victim was reportedly going to their house in the town proper from his nipa hut a few meters away from the crime scene.

However, when he met Tasik, he mistook her to be an "aswang" on one of her human-eating ventures, which prompted him to "fight for his life."

`IT WAS AN ASWANG'

Cabasa, however, maintained before the police that he killed an "aswang" - a big dog that allegedly blocked the road.

The suspect alleged over Aksyon Radyo that he was on his way home when he met a dog with big ears, red eyes and big tail, blocking his way, and behaved as if about to devour him.

This caused him to grab his knife and stab the "dog."

"I believe that what I killed was an aswang, not lola Guillerma. I can't afford to kill her because we have no quarrel or misunderstanding," Cabasa said.

The suspect admitted that he used to bring his knife to defend himself everytime he would come home late at night.

The Tigbauan PNP said that the suspect might face murder charge. This, despite Cabasa's denial that he killed an "aswang" and not Tasik.

... in response to Another Aswang?, posted by Ray on Sep 5, 2003

I am a student an investigator of the occult and the paranormal. Since I am going to the Philippines and will most likely marry a Filipina, I have been studying the folklore of the Philippines.

I find it interesting that in the East their society and institutions haven't wiped such concepts from the Filipino mind and imagination. As oppossed to western culture where there is a large effort from an early age to erase such notions from our perceptions, and dismiss them as nonsense and fantasy.

It also seems that no matter the culture or geographic location there are some themes that run through them all.
The Philippines have the large black pig, with glowing red eyes, a highly feared omen of evil. In the British Isles accounts have circulated for years about giant black cats stalking the countryside, although no such species has been proven to dwell there. Even in the USA there are legends of the Black Dog, hellhounds, wandering lonely highways at night.

As for Filipino creatures like Aswang and Tigbalang, the concept of flesh eaters, blood drinkers, and shape changers is nearly universal in folklore. And the Kapri appears very similar to our Bigfoot and the Yeti.

I'm leaving for the Philippines Sunday and hope that I may get the chance to talk of some of these things with some locals.

Hi Ron,

I thought the Kapre was a short dude who lives in the trees and smokes cigars. One thing I did learn is that the descriptions and characteristics of the legendary monsters vary widely from region to region in the Philippines.

The Aswang is big in Panay/Iloilo and they believe that the Aswangs come from the province of Capis. My ex was from Iloilo and took some of this stuff real seriously. She heard all of the stories from her grandmother. She said the old people, especially the old women, would have all the little kids sit around and tell them monster stories. If the kids didn’t pay attention at story time, they might get whacked on the head with a stick (LOL). They didn’t have TV or electricity back then in the province.

The version of the Aswang that I heard all about would change into different forms, especially bats or animals, and hunt pregnant women at night. They would attempt to eat the fetus from the womb and pregnant women had to be very careful of the Aswang. The Aswang could even fly up onto your rooftop, punch a small hole in the roof, and lower a very long tongue down to the pregnant woman’s belly so it could suck the fetus right out. You could protect yourself by placing lots of fresh garlic around the doors and windows and throwing some up on the roof.

I actually saw an Aswang when I was living in the Philippines. Well, at least I was told that I saw one by the old woman who lived next door :-). It appeared as a large Kalabao (water buffalo) in the middle of the night in the city. I saw it standing alone down in the street  when I looked out the window. It was staring up at me and when I turned away for a split second, it vanished into thin air. Strange!

While you are there, ask the older folks about the local legends. Ask them about the Aswang, Kapre, Duende, Mananangal, and White Lady. Also ask them about the legend of Maria Makiling, a famous Fairy. This is great stuff!

Have a great trip,

You're right Feb! It's always better to be safe than sorry because nobody knows if the Aswang is here. A few of them could have slipped through immigration on fiancée visas or came across the border from Mexico disguised as undocumented workers (PC for illegal aliens). Now California will even issue a driver's license to illegal Aswangs!

I didn't know that you could also protect yourself by wearing black at night. Thanks of the tip... :-)

According to my State Asemblyman, if you are opposed to the law to give illegals a driver's license, then you are a racist and you hate Mexicans. No, I didn't vote for the bozo.

These Democrats are simply amazing! :-)

Hum,

If you heard that Bush was all for it, then you heard wrong. It's strictly a Democrat plan and no Republicans voted for it.

There is a DMV office here in San Diego just a few miles from the border. If I were a DMV Testing Officer, I think I would have all the drive test applicants drive across the border and make a U-turn. If they can't get past the border patrol to re-enter the US, then they fail the test (ROFL).

Naw, that's Calif Gov. Gray Davis that signed the state law after previously opposing it. Nothing like a desparate pandering politician.
