Yes, that’s correct Steve. An honest cabbie in the Philippines, believe it or not (LOL).

But I don’t quite understand the last paragraph... :-)

Honest cabbie ‘speaks well of Cebu’

A CEBUANO taxi driver was commended by the Municipal Council of Silago in Southern Leyte for returning a lost wallet to one of its councilors during the recent Visayas Convention of the Philippine Councilors’ League (PCL) in Cebu City.

The council passed a resolution last March 31 commending Edgardo Ojeda of 49-C Panganiban St., Cebu City for his honesty “that deserves commendation for acts beneficial to the visitors of Cebu City.”

A copy of the Silago Council Resolution 80 S-2003, sent to the Cebu City Council, did not name the councilor who owns the wallet that fell out of his pocket when he boarded Ojeda’s taxi.

The Silago councilors joined the Visayas Island Congress last March 21 to 23. On the last day, they took a taxi to the port area, where the wallet of one of the legislators fell. The owner noticed the loss only after he got off the taxi.

Later that day, Councilor Roland Tagnipez of Hinuangan, a neighboring municipality in Southern Leyte, happened to take the same taxi.

The driver then asked Tagnipez if he knew the owner of the wallet. Tagnipez, who is acquainted with the owner, then asked the driver to write down his name and address.

He took the wallet with him to the port area and returned it to the owner.

Ojeda’s honesty “reflects the leadership of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, Vice Mayor Michael Rama, the former PCL national president, and the Cebu City Council,” the resolution read. GAC

I don't think any of them are saints, but I can tell you that of probably hundreds of cab drivers I experienced, the drivers in Cagayan De Oro are near saints
compared to Manila area drivers. Numerous CDO area drivers told me that the mayor is very strict about jerking the papers for crooked cab drivers. Then again, if one looks like an easy mark all bets might be off, though in Manila
I don't recall ever meeting a cab driver I could trust.

Hello Nat,
Met my first honest cabbie in April of this year.  Got in a cab at the departure location at Aquino.  Took me to the hotel and charged me the meter price of P150 so I gave him P500 for his honesty.  I only pay the meter price when they try to cheat me.  99% of cabbie in Manila will try to ride you without the meter but this is illegal.

There always honest people in every occupation, sometimes it is hard to find them.

Cheers
Alvin

Ray,
Are you sure you weren't hallucinating when you found this article??  An honest Filipino cab driver??  Come on now!!   Stop joking around all the time – this is supposed to be an informative board – so Be SERIOUS!    LOL    I’ve experienced too many of those guys - honesty couldn't have been his motive....there must be some other explanation.  Most likely there wasn’t enough money in the wallet to be worth stealing so he returned it anticipating a reward larger than the amount of cash inside.     Or maybe he copied down all the credit card info 1st….yeah, that’s it!   Hey, or maybe he swapped the cash with counterfeit money.   Yeah....I bet that’s what happened.    Something tells me that if this had been an American's wallet with a thick wad of $$$’s, it would have never been found.   OK, maybe I'm TOO skeptical but I just can't bear to say anything nice about those guys!  They have been too big a pain in the rear for me.  Smiley

Yep, that last paragraph in the article IS a bit much, isn't it?   How the heck can the Mayor and Vice Mayor take credit for something an individual in his town does?  What a ham!

After I got mad at the guy for requiring P300 instead of using the meter, he later came back to return my wallet I had left.  Everything in tact.  I almost couldn't believe it.  Especially after I had said he was a thief for not using the meter.

Hi Geoph, welcome to the forum!

You were lucky that time, but we have heard several first-hand stories here about honest cab drivers in the Phils. How many times have you been over there?
