Are we going to have any good trip reports or will someone have to make one up ?

Seems we've hit a dry patch lately.

... in response to So who has gone over lately ?, posted by wsbill on Nov 14, 2002

I came to Kiev in August and am still here getting to know some girls better. This trip has been enlightening in a number of aspects.
One girl I am seeing now lives in the town of Fastov, about 60km west of Kiev. I often take the train to see her, sometimes on the electric express train and sometimes on the local milk run. The latter train is quite different than the trains I normally travel on. There is a load of vendors going through all of the cars on the train, selling everything from candy, ice cream. various snacks, beer, soda, light bulbs, alarm clocks, batteries, pens and pencils, tools, socks, gloves, umbrellas, hankerchiefs, corn on the cob, and God knows what else. I have lost track of all that is sold on the train, but for 1 hour and 20 minutes, the sales pitch doesn't stop.
I commented on this amazing display of hustlers to my lady friend, and she told me that there is a saying in Ukraine that goes "Those who want to live, have to run". After seeing all of this in person, I have to believe it is true. Sure am glad I do not have to try to survive like these people do. It does show that they will do whatever they can to survive.
Winter has come to Ukraine, and it has been cold, with some snow in both Kiev and Lvov. Today it warmed up to about 59 degrees F. in Kiev. A welcome change.
I took a trip to Lvov, and will recommend to future travellers there to stay at the Grand Hotel. A nice place, and the staff there strive to make your stay enjoyable.
Another point to mention. During the last 3 months, I have had the "Turkish drop" as it is called, tried on me 5 times, twice just within the gates of the Rus Hotel. The old trick of a guy passing you quickly on the right side while walking, pretending to pick up a wallet or pack of money, then wanting to share it with you, his new friend. Not his family or friends, or just keeping it himself, but sharing it with you. I have finally gotten to the point where I cuss them out VERY LOUDLY, and they quickly go away.
One last point, during my stay here one of the local English schools asked me to teach one of their classes and I did so. They paid the thrilling rate of $7.00 per hour, 2 hours a day, 4 days a week. It was mainly for my amusement and the opportunity to see some of the locals, both men and women, and get to know some of them under different conditions besides meeting women. But often the schools here are looking for teaching help for those who might be interested in staying for a longer period of time.
That's all for now.

I received a few e-mails from some PL posters who think that the reason is all the negativity.

One guy wrote to me saying that there are those here who blast guys for going over, meeting a lady with the K-1 quickly following. This person says that he thinks that people just do not want any bashing and so, no more trip reports. It is a fact that trip reports have dropped off dramatically.

There are indications that with the economic downturn, there are fewer going over but, this much?

So, anyone here not posting for the reason mentioned?

Hey, any information is good information. Not getting many trip reports. When I did mine a lot of people appreciated it.

Did you get any ideas of how you would have done it differently? What city were you in?

If where you went SUCKED, you should try Mazatlan, Cancun, and the Club Med destinations where the beach boy brings you drinks with the little umbrella in it.

The nice things about the rest of the world is that they are NOT like things are here...orderly, reasonable people, (sometimes)a common language, (sometimes)and things that seem to proceed in an orderly fashion.

I have lived in most of the worlds capital cities, and many that were not, and always found them to be fascinating, and different to where I lived, and therin lies the beauty.

Life is an adventure.  To be adaptable to different situations, to overcome bad circumstances and survive, is a kick.  People always made the difference, whether in Chittagong, Bangladesh, or Kandy, Sri Lanka, or Timbuktu, Mali.

Be aware, and beware, be careful, and cautious.  Be adventurous but have eyes in the back of your head.  Expect the unexpected.

If I had been to Belarus when I was 34, I think I would have thought I had died and was in heaven.

Cancun with the little umbrellas in your drinks is where you belong...or stay home and watch TV.

I will give a trip report about Cyprus, when I have the time to pen this.  Although it has been 11 months since I made the trip, reliving the moments will be fun.

i liked the country, but as for meeting women, no thanks, most were stuck up, looking for money or a guy driving a new mercedes. i did meet a "few" nice girls, but they were not that cute, average looking. i think a person could do better going somewhere else.

Dear Mudd,

Just keep trying.  If I had not met my girl, there were dozens I would have been interested in...there are so many.

I had written to mine for 8 or 9 months before I met her, and told her I was sweet on a Ukrainian girl.  When this didn't work out, I told her so, and we met in Cyprus.  She was persistent and hopeful.  As we were not much more than penpals, we discussed everything.  When we met, we were like old friends.

Like Yoe/Joe said, "The FSU is the greatest and largest singles bar in the world, but will cost you $2K to walk in the door."

Just get back up on the horse.

Sorry for my previous comments to you...I meant no disrespect.  Jack is probably correct when he says that some 40% may be scammers.  You will get out of this what you put into it.  I would try a little harder.

Good Luck.

Where have you been in Belarus?  Why was it superior to other parts of the FSU?

One thing you said is certain...yours is a stupid message. Let me see, so your advice is to go in as "blind as a bat"
roll the dice, even though you may not need to!!! Well, I would really want to hear some more advice from you.

Romance is wonderful. Reality sometimes isn't, especially if you are stupid.

PS: Did you know that you and Jack spell the exact same words incorrectly? Thought you would like to know.

Globetrotter, I have gone over the message posted by TomTx that you are referring to over and over again.  I see where Tom wrote the word new when it should have been knew and I know I have made the same mistake before. But I cannot find any other mis-spelled word in his post. You mentioned "words" so there must be another one.

I give up Globetrotter, PLEASE, it is driving me crazy, what other word, or words, does TomTx misspell the same as I ??

Hello Jack...

You sometimes like to transpose "there" for "their" or
"they're"

Welcome Back.

Hell, everyone knows I do that. You mean TomTx does the same thing? No wonder I couldn't find it!

It must be one of those Texas things, you know, like is it spelled ain't or aynt?
