Been to Kharkov just a few months back. Grey and dingy city. As a whole women were rather plain looking. The Hotel Kharkov's room gave me a futon bed on the floor plus they ripped me off with the bill. They are not to be trusted. Many women are well versed in scamming here which surprised me for I thought it was a bit out of the way. Apparently they do get a fair amount of foreign visitors and the few good looking ones use them for a free meal etc. The water in the town is not on all the time and forget about it being hot. All in all, I do not recommend going to Kharkov. Kiev is much nicer and many more beautiful women. Of course there too they know the game. Always look for sharks when swimming in these waters. My two cents.

Cellphones beginning with 050 are assigned to UMC, one of the oldest and best established mobile telephone network operators in Ukraine. You can visit their website at -- http://www.umc.com.ua/index_e.html - which may prove useful if you wish to learn how to use GSM's (European mobile telephony standard) SMS (Short Message Service) feature. Many people enjoy the use of SMS messaging back and forth, so you may want to check into it.

The format for dialing her number - if calling from the US is - 011 - 380 (Ukraine country code) - 50 (drop the leading zero) - and then her number (probably 7 digits). SO it looks like: 011-380-50-xxx-yyyy.

Also, if you are interested, here is a link to area codes in Ukraine for more than 500 cities/towns:

As for the questions of "best rates to Kharkiv" - the international long distance rates are changing at a feverish pace so it is difficult to know which is cheapest at any point in time. I've chosen to use AT&T's international service for 2 reasons (neither of them are cost) - (a) their quality of connections has been far better than every other service I've tried - and I've probably tried 20 or so - and (b) I receive frequent flier miles on Delta for use of this service. I think I pay about $.29 per minute.

I hope this helps.
