Letters from INS in the mail today.  Conditions have been removed, and my wife and daughter have been approved for 10 year green card.  We mailed the I-751 to TSC Sept. 10.

Lena and I are coming up on two years, and will have to file after Jan 3rd. I gave the form a glance last night - Just mail the form with 75 bucks, no "supporting evidence?" Did you have (ugh) another interview?

Thanks (and 'gratz)

We will be submitting our 751 before our jan 21 deadline.
I wonder what the real "advantages" of citizenship would bring.

... in response to Citizenship in forecast?, posted by tfcrew on Nov 2, 2002

I have told my wife that citizenship is an issue she will have to decide for herself because it has such a significant impact.

Some advantages are (1) Traveling back and forth to Ukraine with a US passport and not having to worry because lack of the infamous "exit stamp". (2) Thanks to Fidel Castro cleaning out his prisons and filling the Mariel boats with them, greencard holders are always subject to deportation.  Even such a small thing as an argument with a neighbor can lead to "undesirable immigrant" classification and deportation.

Some disadvantages are (1) Loss of citizen rights in Ukraine.  (2) Having to obtain a visa every time she wants to visit her family.  This could be a significant issue should she need to return quickly for a family emergency.

My wife is persuing naturalization primarily to achieve worryfree exit from Ukraine when she visits her family.  She has a girlfriend who married an AM shortly after our marriage.  My wife had no problems returning from her visit home, but her girlfriend did.  She made it back, but was told to register with the Ukraine Embassy immediately after reaching the states.

Are you guys aware that in addition to the "exit stamp", your Ukrainian brides are required to register (and pay a fee) with the Ukraine Embassy in Washington?

Yes.  Unfortunately, The Ukraine government has decided it appropriate to extend their "Ukrainian Only" policy to their embassies in other countries as well as their own, and it is no longer in english.  You will probably need your wife to read it with you, as I did.

Go to the Ukraine embassy ... http://www.ukremb.com/
Then select the "Passport Information (in Ukrainian)" option.

Your wife will not be happy.

I have a dream come true Ukraine wife. She is a conditional resident ..(soon to remove conditions)..
The subject is.. what is the advantage of the oath of US citizenship to her Huh (she would lose her Ukraine citizen ship ..a DISADVANTAGE because she owns properties  there)I will repost on this thread with links to previous related mssgs..
A comeback for "OH he's a smartass" .."He's not all that smart"
Also..when I do "look around" I see a lot of foreign faces

Karl, chill out a bit before you jump to conclusions re: what I said. No one on this board need to think that I'm jumping in their doo - it's not my style. But, I am a human being and occasionally I miscommunicate. I am a simple person and even answering this takes a tremendously amount of more effort than ever was intended by my original comment. Especially when considering that you and I may have no conflict. Thus, your reaction kind of blew my mind.
I erred in not paying more attention to John F's original post partially because it was all Greek to me because I have no first hand experience with what he said. I simply read what your response was. Your first sentence I also did not relate to - same reason. Your next sentence, solely on it's own, triggered by brain and my value system and generated my response. It was,

"I wonder what the real "advantages" of citizenship would bring."

Now, whether you could have worded this differently in context with what your intended thought was OR whether I could have read it differently with what my patriotic value system is, to me seems to be a totally worthless B___ S___ debate that most readers don't really relish being a party to. Simply put, there was a miscommunication here and I was a party to it. Come on, man, please don't lower yourself into taking low swipes at me beyond that error. I won't play that game and this board has recently expressed a low tolerance for it.

..And forgive my pun. The pros and cons of citizenship (as JF wrote) are not easily resolved..esp w/Ukraine citizens.
As I wrote, we are presently collecting our stuff for removing of conditions giving 10 years to decide "What next"?

I almost expected the usual dribble responces to citizenship..Y/N
ie "the right or privilege to vote" etc
I am beginning to see the topic as growing moot in our case.
As long as Svetlana retains her Ukraine status as well as permanent resident as my wife...all is well isn't it? The big question may be "would she be hurt as an heiress to my estate not having citizen status"..things to this effect beyond the immediate scope of this board..

Again, Bob, the comment about being "smart" was general and not directed or intended as a swipe. . I am far from "expert" but will continue to offer my experience to those in need...

John,  that's because PL.com put a cookie on your machine.  Unless you enjoy typing your name over & over, I think it's a nice feature.
