... in response to sorry - this turned out to be a mini-nov..., posted by robobond on Oct 22, 2002

The two books I have specifically about Stalingrad are
Stalingrad 1942-43 by Stephen Walsh
Enemy at the Gates. It's loaned out right now so I don't know the author. It's the book that the movie is based on but it's more accurate.

Supposedly there is a large group of Americans living somewhere in Volgograd doing advisory work for the factories. I saw one on the street once and I saw a "stereotypical" MOB guy at the airport once. At an internet cafe I saw some Africans. Other than that I never met any foriegners in Volgograd. In Vladivostok I saw and met many people from around the world.

I want to take the trans-siberian too. Vladivostok was my last destination in Russia. I think I've seen everything there. My current girlfriend took the train to St Pete's to visit family just after I left Russian in June. Then she and her mom got a cheap bus trip from Moscow to Paris and back. I would've killed to been on that trip. A month covering all of Russia and most of Northern Europe! Ah well, after I win my million I'll be able to. For now I have to "settle" for a month or so each year in Russia.

I just read this one on my last trip to Russia.

Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege, 1942-1943
by Antony Beevor

Tatyana read it too, and found it fascinating.  Previously, she had only read books about "The Great Patriotic War" that had been written from Russia's perspective

... in response to RW'isms, posted by robobond on Oct 21, 2002

Here's a few "RW'isms" that I've seen in agency profiles that might be confusing to AM ; but I'm sure there's hundreds more . Some words/phrases/expressions just don't translate well from Russian to English ( and that's why it's probably a good idea to avoid 'slang' terms in correspondence ); and I'm guessing that a lot of women/agencies just don't bother to check if the words they're using have the same meaning in English...

RW Term ( English Meaning or Translation ) :

Active rest ( indoor and outdoor activities for relaxation)

Careful ( caring or considerate )

Communicable, Communicative ( Sociable )

Communicating ( socializing )

Counterbalanced ( even-tempered )

Create coziness at home ( homemaking )

Create a family ( Get married )

Economist ( accountant, clerk , salesperson )

Financially Secure ( stable income )

High/Higher Education ( College or University education or degree )

Genorous ( giving or supportive , not necessarily finacially)

Machine ( car )

Materially Provided ( financially secure or stable )

Shaping ( aerobics or exercise )

Sporty ( athletic or physically fit )

Strong ( refers to character , not physical qualities ; strong-willed in other words )

Strong Family ( good / normal family )

Well Balanced ( even-tempered )

Without Bad Habits ( non-smoker/drinker/drug user )

Was this sort of what you were looking for ?

The dictionary says "linguist" but I never met an American linguist, so  I can't imagine why there would be so many from Russia. Is it a student of foreign languages or?

I read that all the time.  Should that be interpreted literally?

more than the literal meaning of greedy.  So many of these phrases seem not to be taken literally like they say "careful" instead of caring.

Think of it this way; being under communist control for so long, sometimes people of ambition are seen as greedy by them because of their "self-serving ways" rather than the "for the good of all" communist doctrine. I made mention that I was considering running for a local councilman position to a couple of different ladies on my first trip over and got some strange looks. Apparently most people look on politicians (at whatever level) and the mafia (who can tell the difference over there) as being greedy.

One thing all of you need to remember-----Everything is for sale in the FSU, from human life on down. The "Have's" are often viewed as greedy, the "Have-not's" and the "Near-do-well's" are viewed as "normal". The persona you portray has much to do with how you are labeled.

better look for a girl that wants a greedy man.  I can see why they think politicians are all corrupt.  You can tell them in America, only some are corrupt.

... barracuda, they won't be hard to find.

It's also easy to tell which politicians here are honest, "they don't fit in with the mainstream".

Especially:
1) active rest (assumed outdoor activities)
2) careful (you want dull and boring?)
3) strong (I thought they meant it literally)
4) generous (took this literally also, goldiggers)
