Dan,

Here is a *really* bad answer:

White - for the color of their skin

Blue - for the way the long winter makes them feel

Red - for all of the blood spilled by the Red Terror

It is kind of a take off on the African national flag ("green for the color of our country, black for the color of our skin, and red for the blood we have shed in our struggle for freedom", etc )
