... since I've visited here but I thought I'd stop in again.  I see a few messages below from those asking if any of this actually works.  It does.  My situation was a little different in that I met my wife while she was here as an au pair.  She's from Ukraine, near Odessa, and had been here 10 months when we met.  Weeks later, after things had moved quicker than either had anticipated, she said she had to make plans to go home.  To make this short, I made a counteroffer.  Last month we celebrated our fifth anniversary.  Trained as a linguist, she's now a software developer with a salary over $75K and is pursuing a Masters' in Software Engineering at a local university.  (While we were waiting on her work papers I suggested some computer classes at the local community college... Go figure?)  Next week she will be naturalized as a US citizen and in December we're making our second visit 'home'.  After a rough time from the local yokels at Xmas '98, I said we wouldn't go back until she was on a US passport.  (We had considerable problems renewing her cancelled Soviet-style passport.  I spent about $700 to 'expedite the processing' of a new one while there...)

But through it all, one thing stands out...

It works!

A very interesting story...

So, she wasn't YOUR au pair...was she? How did you two meet?

No, I wasn't "doing the babysitter"!!    It was a friend-of-a-friend kind of thing that came from an Internet conversation.  A few phone conversations and I asked her to meet as I didn't want a phone friend.  We agreed to meet at a local restaurant.  As I waited near the entrance, a "large" girl came walking up and I immediately decided if she asked my name my response would be "No, my name is John and I'm waiting for my boyfriend" before I ran for the car.  Fortunately, Natasha showed up a few minutes later looking beautiful and tiny - just as I prefer!

I hadn't even considered dating a foreign woman.  Not that I ruled it out - it just never occured to me.

Oh man!

Of all the luck!

Well... congrats to you! I'm sure your story has a lot of guys who have spent thousands of dollars trying to find a foreign woman just scratching their heads.

It's good that at least you recognize that you are a lucky man!

It reminds me of an interview I read years ago with Jaromir Jagr -- at the time the Penguins talented Winger. He had been in the NHL for two seasons. Both years, they had won the Stanley Cup.

Someone asked him how it felt to be a Stanley Cup champion, and he said, he didn't understand what the big deal was. Everyone talked about how hard it was to win, and he had his name on the cup twice in two tries!

Of course... he hasn't been back to the Stanley Cup Finals since. So... I'm betting he understands it now...

Anyway... congrats. Thanks for sharing your story, even if it does turn most of us green with envy!  :-)

By the way I really did just hear this..

ps for those of you who do not know-this is a commercial for old people sounding devices incase they are in trouble. It featured and old woman who fell and cried out in pain and fear, "I have fallen and I can't get up". I became a social side joke.

Our age differences aren't so extreme as that.  I was 37 and she 23... add five years to that now.

Before our first trip I asked about her Dad.  She said he was *very* protective and chased the boys who came calling away.  She related a tale of one in particular who Dad wasn't too fond of.  He was divorced (hmmm... me too!), had 2 two kids (I had none.. a plus for me!), and what really ticked Dad off was that he was 10 years her senior.. (Uh-oh... "there's a storm on the horizon, Cap'n!")  Our first night there Dad and I sat and pounded down more than a few drinks.  She woke me the next morning smiling and said that I had successfully passed Dad's test of manhood.  (Passed it?  I didn't even *remember* most of it!)  I did notice however that Dad was wearing my watch to breakfast and smiling a lot...

"To Your Health!"

That was too funny. You must have said something to get the heads up from her Dad. Smiley
