WE had our AOS interview last Tuesday in Newark for the AOS, and after waiting an hour to get close to the appointment time, we gave  our invitation letter to the clerk, and 30 minutes later were invited in for the interview. After talking for 15 minutes of talking to the chinese gentleman who was the interviewer (my wife talked better english than he), we were granted the approved stamp in the passport, and expect the actual greencard in 2 to 6 months. Now comes the question ! My wife found some airline tickets for a GREAT price in November, but is concerned about problems with Russian customs allowing her to exit with only a stamp in the passport, in case the greencard doesn't show up in time for our trip. Has anyone got information about if this is a problem leaving Russia?

Congratulations!  The stamp is sufficient to allow her to exit Russia and reenter the U.S.

Olya received the same stamp in her passport (I-551) and then departed for Ukraine and Russia just 3 days later - long before the green card arrived.

She entered Kyiv, but then exited Moscow to return to the US, and the process was entirely problem-free.

BTW - this was only 2 weeks ago, so it is pretty recent information.

And another BTW - the AOS interview was on 12 June, and we just received her green card yesterday (26 July) - about 6 weeks later.

I hope this helps.

... in response to No Problem Whatsoever . . ., posted by Dan on Jul 28, 2002

My wife and I are planning a trip to Russia and Ukraine in late September or early October to spend 2 weeks.

My wife is from Odessa, Ukraine.

We applied for advanced parole when we filed for the AOS.  The lady at the Louisville INS dept. set our AOS interview for October 15th.  At that time the INS never put any I-551 stamp in her passport.  Instead about a couple of months ago we recieved this document I-512.

This is just an INS form that has information and her photo pasted to it with Immigration Naturalization Service stamped to it.  There is also the Acting District Director's signature stamped on it.

The document reads.  "Presentation of the attached document will authorize a transportation line to accept the named bearer on board for travel to the United States without liability under section ...... of the Immigration and Nationality Act for bringing an alien who does not have a visa.

Presentation of the original of this document prior to May 29, 2003 will authorize an immigration officer at a port of entry in the United States to permit the named bearer, whose photograph appears hereon, to enter the United States."

It also states in the remarks section "Multiple entries - Valid until May 29, 2003

My question is if this document will suffice in our travel plans to Russia and Ukraine and allow her to return to USA safely without much hassle.

Also, I wonder if I need to send in anything in order to get special permission for her to enter Russia or Ukraine.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks Jim

She has the correct document and should have no problems with your trip.  You get the stamp in your passport when you clear the AOS interview for the green card.

Jim,

Your wife has the advance parole document, she shouldn't have any problems.  With a Ukrainian passport, and this document, my wife has had no problem leaving Ukraine and re-entering the US.
One thing, her passport lists her maiden name, in Ukrainian, while her advanced parole document lists her married name, in English.  So, she carries with her our marriage certificate, which lists both, in case she is questioned at the border.
