secam in ukraine??

Am I correct in thinking that SECAM is the correct video format in Ukraine??  I am finnally getting around to putting our wedding video together for my wife's family and friends and of course it will have to be put in a format they use in Ukraine-- is it Secam?? just want to be sure-- thanks,

I've sent video's via postal mail, and they have arrived intact and passed custom's inspections.

here is what I did I left a 8mm camera over there and now isend them the 8mm tapes from here and they can plug that into a tv and then tape them Rick

On a related note... I was told by FedEx that sending any type of media (CD's, DVD's, or Video cassettes) is prohibited by Ukrainian customs. Since I didnt want to waste my time or money I took the items out and my package still got stuck in Ukrainian customs for over a week. Further, they also tried to charge the recipient an import duty even though I declared the total value at $15. Ultimately, I was able to charge the duties to my FedEx account, but it took them an additional week and lots of complaining for them to do it. I've since started using DHL for all packages.

Just wanted to warn you. Anyone else encounter anything like this?

I've tried all the different couriers into, and out of, Ukraine. Only the USPS has been entirely trouble-free with all parcels arriving intact and without additional fees/taxes/etc. - albeit somewhat slower than the other couriers.

DHL is next best - but they are far less effective.

If your in-laws purchased their video equipment in the past 5 years or so (pretty likely), then the video format they *probably* have is PAL.

SECAM was used in an earlier time, so if they have equipment that is quite old, it is possible that it is SECAM.

You may need to ask them first, but I'd wager they have PAL equipment.

All the video tapes that my wife brought back were PAL (and some were quite old). They were mostly my daughter's cartoons and we had them transfered at a Russian video store in Sac. I would take your tapes to a video store that does conversions and ask them which format to use. If you can't find one you can send them to me and I'll take them to Sacramento for you. It's only $6 per hour of tape (new tape included). Best wishes. Ed

As I understand it, this guy is planning to send videos shot in the US over to Ukraine and is trying to make it easy on his in-laws by insuring the tape is in a format they can view on arrival.

This is a little different than bringing videos from Ukraine back to the US. Principally it's different because I suspect we have more facilities for convering one video format to another than are readily available in Ukraine. Having said that, I have to admit I have never had occasion to seek out video conversion services in Ukraine - and I am sure they are available.

I am sure that these guys can convert tapes either way. They even sell PAL VCRs and TVs.
