Last week, I was in Kiev, Ukraine.

Or... at least, I THINK I was.

The fact is that there were so many things told to me about the city that when I finally got there, I had to wonder if maybe I had wandered into the wrong place.

Let me dispel two myths about Kiev... (at least from my point of view) so maybe others won't have the strange "alternate universe" feeling that I had:

MYTH 1: Kiev has become very expensive. (I read this: "today Kiev is as expensive as Moscow...")

Truth: Kiev was cheaper than any city I have been to in a very long time. A cab ride almost anywhere costs about 3 bucks. (Tip? Don't be silly, you don't tip a cabbie in Kiev!)

We ate at some of the best resturaunts in Kiev. Our AVERAGE bill was about $40 for two. That is NOT expensive. A few nites, it was $30. Now, my date does not drink. But I always had a couple of beers. We ate steak, chicken shashlyk (shish-kabob) I had lamb... we weren't trying to save money. (Well, maybe Victoria was...)

Groceries were cheap, too.

I bought a guitar there -- brand new -- for $50. My engagment ring was about $60. (She picked it... I wanted the one that was $300 and I thought she'd faint...)

The flat I rented was $80 a night, and that is what I would call "Moderately" expensive. I could have had a flat for less, but I wanted something nice and centrally located.

Anyway... considering that Kiev is the eco-center of Ukraine, it was VERY cheap. If you comapre it to New York, San Francisco, or even Dallas, it was a bargain.

MYTH 2: Babes are EVERYWHERE in Kiev.

Not true.

To all of you guys who said: "You will get whiplash from all of the beautiful babes walking by!" I have one thing to say:

You need to get out more.

Like... to Dallas. I'm not kidding. I see more knock-outs walking around the Galleria mall in Dallas than I did in Kiev.

And it isn't like I was hanging around the fish market, either. We went to some great resturaunts... we went near the university... and we were at the Maximym Casino and Discoteque on Ladies night.

In fact, they had a "Miss Kiev" contest there while I was in town, and I saw some of the beauties walking around town.

Were there beautiful women in Kiev? Yes, certainly. But... and I'm not kidding... the best looking one is the one I "shipped in" from Kherson. A roving eye was never a problem for me... she was simply MUCH better looking than the women we saw.

And, I saw a LOT of over-weight women. Dressed in unflattering clothes, and they were not just babushkas, either. I saw a few college aged women who were a wee bit on the chubby side.

It may be anecdotal, but I was there for a whole week. And, I gotta tell you, from an "eye-candy" standpoint, Kiev was a real disappointment.

Fortunately, that's not what I went there for. But if I had, I would have been really disappointed.

And, for those of you who think you're going to just go over, and stop a babe in the street and get a date: Lotsa luck. I didn't see ten women that I would have wanted to stop the whole time I was there.

Now... if you really want to see some beauties that stop traffic, you should go to Brazil. Hands down it was a more dazzling experience than Kiev.

St. Petersburg... I will reserve judgement on. I didn't see St. Pb at it's best, it was winter. I did see quite a few beauties in St. Pb... in big fur coats... so I will reserve judgement.

But from a "Babe World" standpoint... Kiev did not stand up to Dallas, let alone Austin Texas.

Just my opinion, FWIW.

PS:

Victoria informs me that Kherson is well known in Ukraine as having the most beautiful women and that men regularly go there from Ukraine in search of a wife.

I will admit that she may be biased, and so am I... but FWIW, I have seen Victoria, and I have seen Tim's wife, who owns A Kherson Rose... and she may have a point...

So the dirty little secret about East European women finally comes out, eh?

"My engagment ring was about $60."

These women make you guys wear engagement rings?  What else?  Drinking out of a glass instead of the carton?  Heck, I don't even wear a wedding ring.  Darned glad I married a Latin woman.  Solitaires just don't look good on me.

You just haven't been to the right store yet, Patrick.  I'm sure if you did some looking around, you'd find a ring that suits you well.  I'd avoid the heart shaped diamonds though; they usually don't look too good on most men...

LOL!!!

Having not been to Kiev, I can't comment on that city.  But I have been to SPb and I found it was just like most US cities, beauties, averages and dogs.

Frankly, I think the whole idea that 'X' city has more beautiful women than anywhere else is kind of silly.  It is true that in certain countries the people have a certain distinct look (compared to other countries) which some could find good, some could find bad.  But the idea that one city within that country is significantly different with respect to how the people look . . . again I find that sort of silly.

It's been my experience that every Russian/Ukrainian woman believes that their city has the most beautiful women.  I have talked to Russian ladies for years and have watched the posts her for a few years as well and I have yet to see or hear a Russian woman claim that some town other than her own has the most beautiful women...

Wow Mark!  I'm really surprised at your report!  I don't know if you happened to be there at a weird time or what but I have been to Kiev twice (my girl is from Dnepropetrovs'k but you have to fly in to kiev) and I really have to disagree in that I think there were always a ton of incredibly beautiful women all over Krishatik street!  Same in Odessa on Deraboska street!

I wonder if it was simply that your mind was on what you already had.  A man who just had a nice dinner doesn't look at the food shops on his way home, you know? LOL!

Same in Dnepropetrovsk while I would be waiting for my girl at the city center, there were always any number of women who I thought were very beautiful, but after she would show up, I just kind of didn't notice them so much!

Interesting...

Mark, you go to Kiev, the one in Ukraine?

Ok, agreed, all men see beauty a bit different, but I see these same Dallas, and Austin, ladies that you see and neither Dallas or Austin combined can come any where close to the number of sensual beauties I see in Kiev. The difference, from my perspective, is as day is to night. There are sooooo many more fine, beautiful ladies in Kiev that I come close to seeing in Dallas. Jack did get, and still does get, "whiplash" in Kiev. Not so in Dallas.

Moscow is an expensive city, Kiev is not. Don't know who is saying Kiev is expensive but I agree with you, it is a very affordable city.

MARK, you spent $80 a NIGHT on a flat! Why?
You could have saved $200 and got a flat ON Kreshytak. A nice, clean, flat ON Kreshatyk. I can't believe you spent $80 a night.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing your new fiancee. I know about three ladies in the DFW area who are from Kherson so this should help your lady as far as knowing someone nearby from her hometown. Give her about two weeks once she get's here and then we will plan a dinner date with a few of these other Kherson brides here.

... in response to Re: Re: The Truth about Kiev, posted by Jack on Jun 6, 2002

It occurred to me today in church why I was so unimpressed by the "eye-candy" in Kiev.

For the past 8 months, I have been attending church at Fellowship Church in Flower Mound. You must know the place, eh, Jack? It's the huge thing across from the Grapevine Mills Mall...

Well, I have been going there because they have a great kids program and my daughter loves it.

It is one of the five largest churches in the country, and over 60% of the people going to it are single.

If it weren't for my daughter loving the children's service, though, I would go somewhere else.

Why?

Because there are so many beautiful women who frequent the church that I find it distracting to the real purpose for being there. I kid you not. I see more beautiful women at church every Sunday than I saw in Kiev in a week. It is downright distracting... and it bothers me sometimes, when I find my mind wandering. Thank God they dim the lights a bit after the music is overm and the sermon starts...

Not that that's why I go to church. For that matter, it's not why I went to Kiev...

But the truth is the truth, and beauty never eludes my eye.

If all I wanted to find were a beautiful woman, I would simply join a singles group at my church. They abound there.

But, my divorce taught me that beauty and Christian values were not enough, sadly, to overcome cultural influences.

So, I have never joined a singles group there.

This fall, however, I think I may join a young married's group :-)

Yep, know the church you are talking about.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, no getting around it. Ladies I thought were dogs, other guys thought were beautiful. Ladies I thought were beautiful, some clients thought they were not.

All that really matters is that the one you choose is beautiful to you, as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.

(but $80 a night! no excuse for that)
