Gold Fillings On Young gal

Seriously, I met a young 21 year old, very pretty, slim with
these gross looking gold caps on her front teeth{three of them}.
A local dentist told me in southern parts of Europe it is considered very attractive to have such gold caps. This gal was not from southern europe but I never asked her why the gold teeth. Any ideas
about this?

Don't worry about it.  Even though it isn't as popular now as it was in the past, gold caps are still very common in Ukraine.  When I was in Zhitomir last fall, I watched a Ukrainian wedding on videotape.  The girl was early twenties and had a gold cap on one of her front teeth.  My wife explained it to me.

Of course, if you bring her to the states, she will likely want to change our for one of those porcelain caps we use over here.  She will not want to stand out from the crowd, believe me...

And they don't have the technology to do the "color match" plastic caps like we do here So, take your pick, it's gold or silver or cavities.

I've seen many older people in Russia with gold teeth but never one that young. It is sort of a status thing. I heard one joke which was badly translated, but the gist of it was that - foriegners will spend their meager dollars on better food or something new to make life more comfortable. Russians will spend it on gold jewelry to show the neighbours that they aren't poor.

That women in Arab and some other cultures get gold teeth so that if their husband kicks them out, they can use the gold teeth to buy their way home to their parents.  It could also be a way to display their wealth (but that's a guess).  I've seen that peoiple in Chinese and Indian cultures like to display gold jewelry as a sign of wealth.
