Heads up for those who have recently married... We waited almost 4 months before applying for her social security card... Im not sure we had to wait so long it has just been a very busy time and we didnt get around to until yesterday. The only thing the lady looked at was Kates birth certificate and her work authorization card... which has a photo id on it... Kate doesnt have her drivers license yet and I think they would have asked for it if she had taken it because the guard first asked her for it before we told him she didnt have it... also I guess it goes without saying the guard asked to search the ladies handbags... Im not sure if this is a post 9/11 thing or not ... all the best,
Keith...  oh I almost forgot the woman that took Kate's application said it would be 60 days or maybe less.. to get the card partly because it had to go through INS first...

Something sounds very wrong! My wife and son received her SSN in the mail withen a week after application.
The requirements for applying for SSN is two forms of I.D. and a birth certificate. My wife's passport and her EAD card was all that was needed to satisfy them, we did try and get a SSN before we went for AOS and the EAD card but were turned away....the EAD is the key to the SSN, it shows that you have delt with INS.

It is very easy here in California to get a temporary photo I.D. card from DMV, it is wise to optain that if she is applying for drivers licence and you wish to take your time with lessons before rushing down for the driving test.

We spent an hour and a half arguing with the morons at DMV trying to get a temporary ID for my wife. They insisted on seeing her I-94 card with was surrendered when she applied for AOS. She had her passport, marriage license, birth cert. (translated and notarized), and her appointment letter from the INS for her AOS interview. They insisted on that stupid I-94 which only shows that she entered the US. DUH??? If she had not entered legally I don't think that the INS would be giving an interview to adjust her status now would they?

They refused to accept her appointment letter saying that it wasn't an "INS document", only a letter. Then they told us that it was OUR fault for filing "out of order". Dermo, it's only an ID card! #@$% them, we'll wait until she has her green card.

Just curious... frankly I was not surprised when the woman said that the paperwork would have to go to INS and that is why there would be a delay... does not surprise me ... in fact in a strange way it sounds like par for the course in a post 9/11 world... or perhaps offices in different areas have different policies... a troubling thought...
