... in response to To Search-on sending money, posted by KenC on May 10, 2002I must, although it is easier to keep quiet. I keep a baseline ( a reality check, if you will ) with about 5 girls in the FSU. Marriage or any of that stuff is not a topic. All are very intelligent and good-looking and single and fairly fluent English and have a huge curiosity of the world beyond their world. This whole quasi-marriage-business is about money, not people. About making a buck.
These girls are not wealthy and all live with their parents and family. But, they are not poor, like an image which is so often painted. Yes, in the USA they would not have the dollars. But, they can move around and do most things in their own country. Like take a train ride and buy food and have stereos and TV's and clothes and everything. No, not our standards, but theirs. They are adept and skilled at living in their country. As we would never be. If a girl wants to communicate with you---beleive me that she will find a way. Trains for Russians and Ukrainians are relatively inexpensive. And so are stamps and emails. Surfing the internet is a big expense, as the line charges are very expensive for them. Paper, pens and envelopes are cheap. Most could not afford to communicate with like 10-20 guys though...only scammers can. But, 1 or 2 guys would be doable. But, they must WANT to. Same with taking a train trip.
They know how to make money in their own country. Like one girl, a science teacher. She tutors University students on the side and makes much more doing that, than her regular teaching job. It is part of the underground economy there---the students or parents pay her for this. There are many examples of this economy. Most are not adverse to work and put in more hours per week than I do. Far more.
Anyway, if a girl wants to meet you in her country she could afford a 500 mile train ride...if she really wants to. However, if she makes this trip...you should upon meeting immediately reimburse her for the train roundtrip and you should pick-up the rest of the tab. Of course, I am leaving out the fact that there are single mom's and poor people who would not have the money. IMHO
