Hi All,

My mother-in-law and wife have done the initial packing for my MIL's return to Russia on Friday, and the scales say ... 100 pounds.  This is, as far as I recall, 30 over the limit.

Does anyone have experience with excess baggage?  Is it always allowable at an extra charge, or does it depend on how full the plane is?  Also, are the charges standard, or do they vary by airline?

Thanks in advance for any insight on this...

Steve M.

It will cost you a LOT extra being 30 pounds over the limit.

Once we were about 10 pounds over and the extra cost was about $200. So we took 10 pounds of stuff out.

Best to weigh your bags before you leave for the airport. Our bags now weigh about 69.5 pounds each.

Because what someone in the reservations office tells you doesn't always match what the person at the airport will insist on.

Anyone who had been dealing with the INS is surely familiar with this principle.
