I want to leave a HP palmPC in Ukraine for Tanya's mother to send emails back and forth. But I can't figure out how you would connect the modem to their phone line. Can anyone tell me how this works. Are there adaptors available over there?

attach wires and let the female end hang out of the old round connection box they use, no modem conflicts

shouldn't be too hard to find in Kiev-------I have seen a few places that have US standard type plugs already installed along with the Ukrainian version.

I bought a used Toshiba Tecra 550CDT on UBid to carry with me on my jaunts, mainly because I hate the thick smoke that is a universal annoyance in every Internet Cafe that I have been in , with only a line adapter I was connected in no time. Having access in your apartment sure beats the heck out of those 1-3AM visits to the Internet Cafe just to check your e-mail.

I have not worked in that industry for a while but Europe was going to standardize modems on more of an American type of standard.  There was to much of a problem for business travelers to require a many different types of modem standards.

Most country adapters accept an American style of phone plug.  Some of the extra connections on European phone plugs are not needed with modems or can be compensated for in the connector.
