Looking for local RW...

Now that my Ukrainian wife and I are settling in, here in Redlands, CA, I was wondering if there are any Russian women in this area. Surrounding communities are San Bernardino, Yucaipa, Highland, Loma Linda, Zanja Heights. If any RW are out there in these areas, please drop me a line. Email in either English or Russian is fine...

Are there any Russian Orthodox churches in your area?  Recent immigrants often seek them out.  They may be good places to make contacts.

I would suggest you go to RussianWomenAbroad at the above link, where your wife can post in the Russian only chat room. I am certain you will find some in the Sacramento area or something. RWs go there all the time and post looking for someone to chat with or meet in their area. Seems they are all a little homesick for their native language and connections.

Oops, another minor fopah on geography. Redlands is nestled between Riverside and San Bernardno, about 400 miles from Sacramento - about the same distance as Kansas City to Chicago or Charlotte NC to New York. You were perhaps thinking of Redding?

Riverside has a Russian community though I'm not sure if there are any stores. There are many, though in the LA area (I know of one in Long Beach but I'll bet the 10 freeway corridor is littered with them) who will be aware of stores in the inland empire. My wife made lots of connections once she started attending ESL classes at the local community college.

We've already done some Russian shopping in LA, at some book/video stores, as well as a Russian Grociery store.  We'll probably head back in a month or two to search out some more of them.  Www.RussianLA.com has a list of Russian stores to find.  It's about 60-70% accurate, enough to find a few stores in one outing.

Was thinking about settling down in Riverside in a few months, once the lease runs out.  We'll have to take a closer look at it...

I don't live anywhere near CA but - I can tell you a few places to start.

Universities usually have a Slavic Languages department. My wife just e-mailed the head professor on a whim and *BAM* now we go to music concerts with her every month - also happens that she is a fascinating individual. UGA here also has a "Russian" club, students mostly, but also friends of the Professors. Made lots of contacts there. We also had a Russian Club picnic last year. (you know, it's amazing to me how many retired ex-spooks are married to Russians..

Ethnic grocery stores - If your fiancee has been in the US more than 24 hours chances are you already know where a few are - ask the shopkeepers if there is a Russian Bridge Club or something.

On a tangent, my wife's best friend isn't even Russian, She's Urgur (ethnic minority in Khazakstan, she'd kill me if I called her a Khazak). She is a research geneticist for BresaGen and knows a LOT of immigrants in the sciences. So far, through her I have met people from Turkey, Australia, Poland, Italy, Japan, China, Hungary, Myanmar, England, you name it. It's a wonderful life experience and wouldn't trade it for anything.
