... in response to in St-Petersburg, posted by micha1 on Mar 6, 2002

I was in St. Petersburg last year from March 24 - March 28.  Earlier in March when I arrived in Moscow I went directly to Tver.  There had to be at least two feet of snow packed hard on the sidewalks, roads etc.  Then there was a thaw and it was the most incredible flood I had ever seen ie. rushing water everywhere with tons of mud.  This thaw went for four days.  So, when I got to St. Petersburg they actually had no snow.  However, everything quickly refroze and it started snowing again.  We had maybe a few inches everyday / night over the four day period I was in St. Petersburg and it was not much below zero during the day and a bit more below zero at night.  I would expect some of what I got the end of last March ie. thaw, water / mud, freeze, small amount of snow.....etc.

I hope you get to see all these great places in and around Saint Petersburg:  (1) The Hermitage, (2) Peterhoff, (3) Catherine's Summer Palace, (4) Pushkin, (I never went there), (5) Savior in Blood Church (?), (6) go to a ballet performance (take cough drops), (7) walk around and see some of the bridges and maybe take a boat ride on the Neva river.

The highlights of the Hermitage for me were the 2 Leonardo Da Vinci oil paintings (2 of 14 in the world), the old Masters room and Catherine the Great's bridal carriage.  I saw the carriage when it was in Memphis, Tennessee at the Catherine the Great Exibit there.

I always say, even if the girl's a total loss, St-Petersburg is a great place to visit.  You might want to buy some lacquer boxes from street vendors.  They are like small painted jewelry boxes and are beautifully painted.  They make great gifts.

If you are like me, without cough drops, you will cough during the performance!

It's not unusual for me to start coughing either but I had my cough drops for the performance.  I went to the Marinsky Ballet but I think they have the Kirov Ballet there.

Try this site. Click on the City you want, then click on Historical Conditions, can check day by day the weather from previous years, will give you a pretty good idea what to expect.

...to St Pete in April Monsewer, but due to the northern latitude me thinks it would kill a Californian. Shouldn't be a problem for a Canuck from Quebec though.

I'm sure someone will pipe up but don't be a puss, just deal with it.

(lol, this from a guy who went to Cyprus because Ukraine is too cold in April.)
