I can honestly say that I've never used a service.  I pretty much used e e c l, the now defunct classifieds2000, and dreamates and met some pretty great ladies.

I owe my success in a large part to this board and the RWL from St John's.   I've been following both for pretty close to two years now and have been able to wade through much of the crap to find the occassional gem:-)   Why am I posting now?  Guess it's time to pay you guys back a little...

I'm using Bulgarian Singles. It's a membership service that is actually pretty reasonable. The only thing is that there are not as many many Bulgarian woman looking for AM than in Russia or Ukraine. That can be a good thing because it's easier to keep track of them but since there may be under 2000 BW looking it makes the choices much fewer. Also the BW are more sensitive about age differences. Most of them are looking for a 7 years or less age difference.

Because there are fewer BW looking, fewer AM are looking in Bulgaria, therefore fewer BW are placing ads. It seems to be that way all over the Baltics. Very few Serbian or Croatian women have ads anywhere.

Bulgarian language is easier to learn than Russian. It retains some of the Greek/Latin sentence structures that are similar in English.
Here is a link to a BG-Eng dictionary translator:

The best Bulgarian language learning book I've found is "Intensive Bulgarian" by Ronelle Alexander and Olga Mladenova. It is available in 2 volumes from Amazon.

I got lucky in the language department...My wife's got a masters in English:-)   Cyrillic was no problem, but as for actually learning the language?  Sigh...gimme a bit more time before I can start structuring sentences.

IMHO, Bulgarian women are more selective for two big reasons.  First, the economy is much better than Russia.  Iliana is a 26 yr old teacher and does live with her parents, but has already accumulated a pc newer than mine, a cell phone(it seem like they're EVERYWHERE!), and two color tv's.  Before I proposed, she was also thinking about buying a new japanese car too.  Show me a teacher in Russia that get's paid like that.

Second, the people have more faith in the government and police.  In Moscow I was searched twice and paid a bribe once(the price I paid for hanging out with a guy who looked vaguely Chechyn)  In St Pete, my then girlfriend was just as afraid of the police as she was of the criminals.  By contrast, the police are very well regarded in Bulgaria and I asked them for directions on a fairly regular basis.  Not a single attitude problem.

Personally, I was more confident about the motives of the Bulgarian women.  Of the two Russian and Ukrainian women I got to know very well there was always that shadow of...desperation(?) well, maybe that's too strong a word, but you get my point.   I haven't felt that with Iliana at all(though, she may be the exception)  Try taking a look at dreamates dot com.  There were at least 30 bulgarian women and a surprising number from surrounding countries like Hungary, Moldava, and Romania, and of course Russia and Ukraine:-)
