My wife has been in the U.S. for 8 months now. She hasn't done borscht yet. She often cooks chicken soup. She cuts the bones out of the chicken and uses them to make broth. We have a freezer full of chicken bones.
During the summer and fall we went to the local "farmer's market" to get fruits and vegetables. My wife enjoyed that. She likes to shop around and get the best price. You also can drive around in the country and find farm stands during the summer. Some farms will let you pick the fruit yourself. We may try that this summer. We missed out on the wild berries last year, but will look for some next summer. A lot of the fruit in the supermarkets looks good but it tastes like it is made out of plastic. My wife noticed that right away. This time of year we don't have much of a choice.
I have never tried eating sorrel. I used to dig the pesky little things out of my garden all the time when I had my house.
Hunting wild mushrooms is popular in Russia. My wife and I have had several discussions about that. Some of the mushrooms here are poisonous, so you have to be very careful if you collect the wild ones. Last fall she was eye-balling the wild mushrooms here and claiming that some of them were just like the kinds that she used to find in Russia. I'm thinking: "I don't know about that, Hon. This is a different continent." I suspect that we will have to go hunting morels this spring. That is the only kind of wild mushroom that most people will eat around here.
My wife likes little wild critters: squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, etc. She claims that there were very few little wild critters in the city that she lived in Russia (Omsk). She says that there are many stray dogs and cats in Omsk and they kill the squirrels and rabbits. We put nuts out on our balcony for squirrels. There are several in the neighborhood and my wife is very happy when they visit us. We have a small park in town with a pond. There were ducks and geese at the pond all winter. We like to go for walks there. When we go, we have to bring some bread so that she can feed the ducks.
