Lol -  Have had it for the past few days and Im still alive and kicking!!  Any of you married guys have your wifes make you this stuff yet??  My wife and her friend started picking what I thought were weeds out in a field and as a smart husband I kept my mouth shut!! It turns out according to the english - russian dictionary that the stuff they were picking was something called sorrel... she makes borshh with it and it is great...

Here is just an idea ... may work for you and it may not... when you are with your woman try to be aware of her walk. Try to take the same steps(smaller steps) that she does and the same rhythm.. may be my imagination but it seems to help bring harmony to the relationship... and while im at it... many of these women are use to going to their flea markets for food and it is also a pleasant way to spend a morning.. if you have a work schedule that allows you to do it-- plan on making it a weekly outing... it will save you money, you will get better veggies, and it will make both of you happy-- of course their flea markets are usually superior to what we have but still if you are lucky like we are .. we have a fairly nice one not far from the house... check it out .. perhaps you have one too... strawberries are in season and we just got a great buy-- 2 flats for 10 bucks... something like 18 containers of the berries you see in the supermarket and these are vine ripened... no way we could eat all these berries in a short time so my honey has made jam with alot of them... lot cheaper and better then the supermarket...

just a few thoughts and observations and suggestions... I would love to hear more from some of the married guys on anything good they would like to share... peace... and of course...
all the best,

Keith

You must live someplace warm like California or Florida!

My wife has been in the U.S. for 8 months now.  She hasn't done borscht yet.  She often cooks chicken soup.  She cuts the bones out of the chicken and uses them to make broth.  We have a freezer full of chicken bones.

During the summer and fall we went to the local "farmer's market" to get fruits and vegetables.  My wife enjoyed that.  She likes to shop around and get the best price.  You also can drive around in the country and find farm stands during the summer.  Some farms will let you pick the fruit yourself.  We may try that this summer.  We missed out on the wild berries last year, but will look for some next summer.  A lot of the fruit in the supermarkets looks good but it tastes like it is made out of plastic.  My wife noticed that right away.  This time of year we don't have much of a choice.

I have never tried eating sorrel.  I used to dig the pesky little things out of my garden all the time when I had my house.

Hunting wild mushrooms is popular in Russia.  My wife and I have had several discussions about that.  Some of the mushrooms here are poisonous, so you have to be very careful if you collect the wild ones. Last fall she was eye-balling the wild mushrooms here and claiming that some of them were just like the kinds that she used to find in Russia.  I'm thinking: "I don't know about that, Hon.  This is a different continent."  I suspect that we will have to go hunting morels this spring.  That is the only kind of wild mushroom that most people will eat around here.

My wife likes little wild critters: squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, etc.  She claims that there were very few little wild critters in the city that she lived in Russia (Omsk).  She says that there are many stray dogs and cats in Omsk and they kill the squirrels and rabbits.  We put nuts out on our balcony for squirrels.  There are several in the neighborhood and my wife is very happy when they visit us.  We have a small park in town with a pond.  There were ducks and geese at the pond all winter.  We like to go for walks there.  When we go, we have to bring some bread so that she can feed the ducks.

ChuckRM, your wife is absolutely right about mushrooms. I live in NC and every summer starting from August to the late autumn I'm picking wild mushrooms. Wild mushroom soup or fried mushrooms are the best treats for my hubby! Of course, she has to be careful, but if she has experience with picking wild mushrooms she'd do just fine. You can get her encyclopedia of mushrooms from library and she'll identify Russian name of edible mushrooms with american.

get her one of those "grow your own mushroom kits" from one of the seed catalogs. Might be a good hobby for her.

Borshch is usually made with beets and other vegetables. You can buy French Sorrel as seed and grow it in the spring.
