Hello everyone, I have been writing to a nice woman in the Ukraine for a few months now. I would like to meet her in person. She does not live in a major city and I am thinking it would be easier to meet somewhere else in Ukraine or maybe Moscow. Would I need a private visa or a tourist visa? I do not know where this relationship is going for now but even so, should I still meet her family? Thanks

Meet in Kiev. If it doesn't work out, you will have the opportunity to meet other women there. If you hit it off after spending a couple of days together, then take the train to her town to meet her family.

Good luck

Will - Tough call. One thing is for sure: If you decide at some point you are serious about this woman you need to go to her home town and meet her family and friends.

Good Luck with your adventure!  William

If you are going to meet in Ukraine Kiev is convenient to most of the country and is easily accessible by air - flights are usually one stop somewhere such as Frankfurt, Paris or Vienna, although there are a couple of nonstops from NY or Toronto.  If I am not mistaken, if you have a private visa - that is, you are going to visit someone - you do not need a "letter of invitation".  I believe a tourist visa requires a letter of invitation.  See the travel information on brama.com for more on the current visa requirements.  I agree with the comments in Jim's post about meeting her family - even if you spend one day in the village it will be well worth the time and effort if you think your relationship will lead to marriage.

Hello Will,

My suggestion would be this.  I would arrange to meet this lady in a larger city closest to where she lives.  The reason I suggest this is for a couple of reasons.

I would say that in case things don't work out for you and this girl right from the start you could have the avaliable resources and ladies from a larger city to choose from in that unfortunate case.(Remember don't put all your eggs in one basket)  It is a good idea to have at least a couple of other ladies you might want to meet in or near this larger city.

The second reason is that when you two meet you will have plenty of things to do and see that can be provided by a larger city.  If you spend all your time in a small town you might not have the variety of entertainment you can find in a larger city.

The next reason is that if you two hit it off then you will definitely want to spend at least some time getting to know her family.  You could then more easily arrange to travel from a larger city near her hometown to her home to meet her family.

The first thing will be to see how you two feel about each other in person and then you can go from there.  And remember to make a few backup plans incase you don't like each other in person.

As far as the visa goes I would think that a tourist visa would work just fine but there may be others on this board who would have better insight on this.

Good luck,  Jim
