... in response to exaggeration, posted by cc on Feb 3, 2001

cc,

I know that conditions with Iran are improving. We may establish formal diplomatic relations in the foreseeable future. I have had several Iranian friends over the years and they were wonderful people. I certainly meant know disrespect to Muslims in general either.

I was refering to Islamic Fundalmentalist Terrorists as a global threat in the sense of terrorist acts against fellow human beings. Certainly mother nature proves to be the biggest killer of all, with natural disasters, draughts, and disease....

I don't know of many people traveling to Iran these days. In my opinion, it has kept the number of incidents to a minimum. According to the State Department travel warning: "There is, however, evidence that hostility to the United States remains in some segments of the Iranian population and in some elements of the Iranian government. In July 1999, violent anti-government demonstrations took place in Tehran and other cities around the country. There were accusations that the US was behind these demonstrations. Prior to and since that time, some groups of Americans travelers have encountered harassment by vigilante groups."

The State Department "2000 Annual Report On International Religious Freedom: Iran," paints an interesting picture of present conditions in Iran also.

Hey, I don't go down to Miami without one of my guns either. Shocked)) It truely has become the third world.

Why do you think Americans are always targeted for hatred by fundamentalists in "crazy" countries, but yet Canada is generally left alone? 9 out of 10 times, when I'm travelling, the tourist yelling and making a scene is, you guessed it, American. When you attempt to dictate foreign policy throughout the world and honestly believe the propaganda fed to you since grade school that your country is the greatest one in the world, then you set yourself up for attack. The biggest joke are American backpackers in Asia who sew a Canadian flag on their backpack. I'm Mike and I'm proud to be a Canadian; after all, who can argue with Shania Twain, Pamela anderson, and Molson Canadian.

Gee Mike,

I live in South Florida and the snow birds are back. You know what, most of the people yelling and causing problems are...you guessed it, Canadians. I don't hold that against all Canadians. I know they are Canadians because they have Canadian license plates on their cars. As for their maple leafs on their T-shirts...umm...could be Americans in America pretending they are Canadian. Shocked)

How do you know that "9 out of 10 times, when I'm traveling, the tourist yelling and making a scene is, you guessed it, an American"? Did they tell you or did you just assume? Most English speaking white people in a foreign land are considered to be "Americans," whether they are or not. In the Philippines...Canadians, English, and Australians are called "Americans," kano, and Joe. When I talked to a few I was surprised to find that they were not American, as I was told by the locals.

Just another old perverted American guy with a young Filipina. One day you will be older and hopefully wiser.

Okay, first of all, those Canadians in Florida are not real Canadians. I've seen them; 70 year old fat guys wearing thongs and speedos, strutting their stuff as they speak French. They drive slow, complain, and are basically cows put out to pasture. I and most other friends in no way identify with them. I assumed 9 out of 10 yelling tourists were American because it sounded good and didn't think anyone would question this statistic I made up. I have no idea what nationality they are, but you're right; they're most often Caucasian.

Sorry Mike,

Not everyone drinks Molson, thinks Pamela Anderson is a serious actress, or thinks Shania Twain is an entertainer.

I think it is great that you are proud to be Canadian. I have friends who are. I happen to have Canadian ancestry. But, I prefer to wear the symbol of my country, USA, on my car, T-shirts, and backpacks.

I am proud to be an American. I don't think that my country is better than any other. If I did, I would be marrying an "American" so I could have "American" kids. Just remember that America is made up of people from every country in the world. That is what makes us Great! Not our wealth. As for those backpackers with Canadian flags, you can keep them too. Shocked)

No one drinks Molson, but a Canadian, yes. And if you watched Barbed Wire, you would know that the Oscars are a conspiracy by Hollywood to overlook all the true greats.Smiley The thing about the States is that most Americans just automatically assume that Shania Twain is American. It doesn't even register in their mind that not everyone is from their country. You have to admit this, as I see it all the time. I have even met guys in the States that had never even heard of Canada and didn't know what it was. And a guy I talked to in Texas once thought that New Mexico was not part of the States. Funny thing was last time I was backpacking in Australia, I had no flag and every one that gave me a ride assumed I was Canadian. They said there are very few Americans that go there to visit.

Canada played an integral role in WWII.  We were there on June 6th 1944, right on Juno Beach.  It's really sad that Americans never recognize the fact.  People in Europe actually really admire Canadians, especially those in the Netherlands because it was the Canadians that liberated them from Nazi Germany, and we didn't do that under the British flag.  The United States may have been independent far longer than Canadian Confederation, but guess what?  We grew up long before you did.  Canada "came of age" after World War I.  When did you guys??  Oh yeah...in 1963
