I noticed the message from DR below about his situation.  He got his wife here on a K-1 and shortly after they were married his wife's mother became ill and she had to return to the FSU, thereby eliminating his ability to file for AOS based on the K-1 visa.  He now has to file an I-130 to start the process over, followed by an AOS filing later.  A similar situation happenned to me after my wife and I were married and our AOS application was still pending.  We were fortunate to live in Maryland and the Baltimore office's normal procedure is to process advance parole applications on the same day if you come in person.  We were out of there by 10:30 a.m. and she was able to assist her mother in Ukraine.  A friend of my wife's had the same situation last month when her mother had a stroke.  Even though she lived in New York, we got her through Baltimore the same day and that evening she made her flight to Moscow.  So, if you ever need advance parole in a hurry and can't get it where you live, you can always come to Baltimore.  I don't know if other INS offices are as efficient on this item, but in this instance it worked pretty well.
