Working on the K1

We went to the local SS office for a number and initially the man told us we had to go to INS for a work permit, then they checked and said that on the K1 the woman had permission to work. But we got the Social Security card and it has a stamp that says: something like: permission from INS required for work.

What's the deal, does my fiancee need something more? How does the prospective employer know if she has the right to work? Anyone with experience with this?

My wife and I visited the SSN office also, we were turned away...told to get the EAD from INS first, then come back.
From what I can remember from the archives, some had success and some did not. My wife has the I-94 temporary work permit attached to her passport, SSN did not accept that because it is void after 90 days from arrival.

Once you are married, your wife is no longer K-1.  She is AOS, and will need an EAD.  We had the same problem with SSA, and because we live in Maryland (the only state where you don't file AOS locally), it took us three months to get a work card out of Vermont.

When you apply for an EAD, make sure you ask for the one-year variety.  I think it is a (c)(9).  You can check on Doc Steen's site to confirm it.

The SS card she has does say on the face of it that she needs INS authorization if she is to work in the US. After you marry and you go to the INS to file your AOS, you submit the forms for the EAD (Employment Authorization Document) at that time. In Denver, we got the card immediately (same day). With the 2 documents (SS card plus EAD) she will have no problem with working legally.

Presumably, after she gets her Green Card, she can re-apply for a revised SS Card *without* the special notation. At least, that is our plan.

Dan,

Once we got the green card (even thought we had adjusted status but were still waiting for the card), the SSA did give my wife a new card without the INS proof disclaimer on it.
