It is northeast of Moscow in the Vologda Oblast. It is at the confluence of the Yug and Sukhona rivers, which form the Dvina river. I think it is about 800 miles from Moscow, and the largest cities near it are Kotlas, which is very close, and Syktyvkar which is about 250 miles NE.

Due north of Gorky, about half way to Archangel.  Near Krasnoborsk, Luza, Kotlas.
