Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. If we were all the same, the world would be boring, and you wouldn't have such a laff at sites like this, would you? I prefer a smaller, cleaner, more laid back, tranquil place. Some would probably find it boring.I live in Manizales, a mid-sized city  the eje cafetero. You can go anywhere you want in 15 minutes and find most things you can get anywhere in Colombia. You are close to all the touristic sites of the Cafetero, including the mountains of Parque de los Nevados, many termales (hot springs) including spectacular Santa Rosa de Cabal. I could go on and on. Lots of parks and nice views, and very friendly people. It is 5 hours from Cali, 6 hours from Medellin and 1 hour from Pereira, 2 hours from Armenia. It is still a little remote, and for this reason, a little expensive. .I am not a big city person, and I am retired and not working and live where I want to live, not because I have to. I also like it here because there are very few gringos and you are forced to meet locals.

This is a university town with about 10 universities. For this reason, you get people from all over. For your information there are a lot of rock and roll / Goth and similar type university people here who smoke marijuana and have tatoos (both sexes)of various types.Don'know if that's the scene you arelooking for, but it shows you you can find different people with different philosophies everywhere in Colombia.

Anyway, you may be more of a big city person, and probably not looking for a long term stay anywhere anyway.

Elex,

Thanks for the description of Manizales. It actually sounds right up my alley. Just like a place I've always imagined settling in for the long haul of retirement. Which I certainly hope is sooner rather than later. I wonder if a big metropolitan city like Bogota may be a better starting point, a homebase so to speak, like Bernard mentioned previously.

See, I'm firmly in the expat camp. I have no interest whatsoever in bringing a fine honey of a latina back to the U.S. No interest in getting hitched again, for that matter. Been there and done that more than once. Not that I'm not looking for a serious relationship, mind you. Or two, or three, or nineteen.

But yeah, Bogota sounds good to me. I've had some pretty good luck chatting up a few brawds from the mountain city. For now. I fully intend to take a good look around Colombia in the years to come. If I could find a way to generate just a modest income, I'd be looking to move permanently real soon. I'm in a great place in my life to do just that; recently divorced, only one adult child (just turned 18), no mortgage or credit card debt to speak of. Paid off my bike just a few months ago. I'm a business owner, so I'm not locked into a job. The business isn't portable, though, unfortunately. Wholly brick and mortar. Anyways, so that's that. It'd be a pretty big blow to my current income, but I'f I could russle up just a couple grand a month to support myself down there, I'd be on my way.

Oh... rock'n'roll/goth/marijuana?  Ha. Stereotype much? 2 outta 3 aint bad, Elex. Heh. And, Manizales is more expensive because it's remote?  Do tell, por favor.

I had to raise my eyebrows on that one too.  No way in hell that Manizales is more expensive than Bogota, or Medellin, probably not Cartagena or Barranquilla either.  Remote areas are much less expensive in Colombia.  Even Jamundi right outside of Cali is far less expensive than Cali.

Also loved how he equated tattoos with marijuana smoking....

Hey, but this is coming from a guy that STILL doesn't know how to use the quote feature on this site....so he's probably in the early stages of dementia, or just plan out confused....LOL

My thinking as well... smaller and more remote usually equates to less expensive. That's why I'm so curious. Maybe he has a few tricks up his sleeve. and/or lives a high on the hog lifestyle. I dunno. Inquiring minds and all that jazz.

Things are actually a bit more expensive here than a city equivalent this size in other parts of Colombia, say Armenia. That is because of transportation costs , because it is higher, up he hill. It is probably cheaper than Medellin  and definitely Bogota. Taxis are way cheaper than the big cities.Start at 2600 pesos minimum rate, and very cheap because of the distances. Housing in estrato 4 to 6 isn't any cheaper than Medllin or Cali. The top Barrios, Milan and Palermo, are almost the same pricing as Poblado or Envigado. Food isnt that cheap if you stick to the main outlets like Exito or Carulla.

This is not just my observations from being here a few months, but has been verified by my Colombian friends who have lived here all their lives. Transportation seems to be the issue-not within the city itself, bt to transport materials and goods and services to the city from elsewhere.
Also flights out of the airport is very expensive, and it is shut in a lot of the time. It is better to go to Pereira, airport, but even that is an issue sometimes.

Also this is the hilliest city I have ever been in,including San Francisco and Dunedin, New Zealand. I imagine the construction costs are not cheap to build all those high rises on the top and sides of the hills. Not to mention the roads and infrastructure.

Doing a quick search on avianca.com, round trips flights from bogota-manizales are vitually the same price as round trip bogota-cali

Not sure where you get ur info regarding flights being "very expensive" in and out of manizales.....roughly about $60-70 per flight.  Same as other ciities a comparable distance away.

I've spent some time in Bogota since one of my sisters-in-law lives in Salitre. Aside from the climate which I am not a fan of, it is by far the most cosmopolitan city in Colombia. It has everything a big city has to offer and is far more connected to the outside world in terms of culture than most cities in Colombia - although that is changing due to the internet. You can now find kids who are into K-pop even in a place like Monteria something I never would have imagined possible previously. As for the women, although I don't find the truly local women anything to write home about, Bogota attracts so many people from all over Colombia that you will find plenty of attractive women. All that being said, it doesn't make my heart beat fast like Medellin with those pale beauties with jet black hair and their obsession with money and work.

I like Bogotá. If you're from New York you feel right at home. I made a day trip up there not long ago when my father came to visit me in Cali. I had to pick up my new passport at the embassy which only took a couple of minutes so we had the rest of the day to be tourists. The weather can be almost shirtsleeve if you're there on a sunny day. I've lucked out on most of my visits. I never get tired of taking visitors to the Gold Museum but you really need a day if you're going to read everything. I really like the energy in Candelaria and downtown, very very different from Cali. Before I got my resident visa and just had the Temporal TS I'd have to make the trip every year. I'd stay at the Platypus hostel (now Chocolate) which could be entertaining. One year there were people from fourteen different countries including most of Europe and even India and Surinam. A couple of days in Bogotá is enough for me though. ...
A minor correction to a post above. Manizales is no longer a five hour trip from Cali, at least not by car. A friend and I drove up some months back and it only took us three and a half. The roads are vastly improved

Bueno, I've heard good things about that gold Museum from fellas. Nice to see it confirmed. While it's not first on my list of things to see and do obviously , I'm definitely going. That stuff just interests the heck outta me. I used to go panning a bit here in SoCal with a buddy of mine. He knows a couple of really good spots in the San Bernardino mountains, near Big Bear. He regularly goes 'Camping' for a weekend and pulls a few hundred bucks out of the ground everytime. Anyways, thanks for the info.

Utopia, thanks! Cosmopolitan is what I'm looking for in a first tip to Colombia.

It's definitely worth a visit. For some reason that place makes me think of Ocean's 11, 12 and 13. I can't help but think, "Boy, if someone could pull off a robbery in this place!"  ;D

"K-pop" is very popular with the kids in South America these days. It is HUGE in Peru.

Do latinas like tatoos? I'm pretty sure you can find lots of them who do. Puerto Rican reggaetoneros usually have lots of tattoos and many latinas love these guys:

K-pop--a multi billion dollar business--and other parts of Korean music, fashion and other media, really are a world wide phenomenon and have been for a while now. It even goes back to before Justin Bieber started getting his hair cut like the Korean pop stars. My wife watches the Korean soap operas and movies a lot, which are very well produced and dubbed into many languages world wide.

I have surmised that between media, electronics and automobiles, (and ship building) Korea is somewhat like a 'new Japan'. If someone told me 10 years ago that people would be paying north of $70,000 for a Hyundai Equus and almost as much (66K+) for the top Kia K9,(Why on earth did they name it like canine??)  I'd have said 'Fat Chance.' Well, they are and they're trading them in and coming back for more...
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Oh yeah those Korean soap operas are incredibly popular in Peru as well, almost as popular as the Mexican telenovelas believe it or not. The teenage girls in Peru LOVE those Korean actors.

Haha--My wife has told me the only man she'd leave me for is Leonardo DeCaprio (I'm glad he likes those tall, Brazilian super models) but she has said a couple of those Korean soap stars are real handsome too--very suave operators.

I don't know why, but I was surprised, then my wife told me on the websites that run the programs, there's a ton of comments in Spanish, as well as many other languages.

When that 'Psy' guy, whose 'Gangnam Style' video broke Youtube's all time watch list, hitting a critical 2,147,483,647 views, (over two billion) their computer counting system for times watched, Youtube had to quit counting--it's 32 integer system wasn't designed to count any higher. They'll need more RAM memory in their computers and will have to run a 64 bit system, which can count to 9,223,372,036,854,775,808........

You can't help but note the contrast between North Korea and South Korea. The North trying to make an impact on the world with weapons and bluster and tyranny and the South with the simple appeal of their vibrant cultural offerings. The North wants to conquer the world but the South has actually done it! May it always be so!

Although various sources have differed on exactly how big the difference is, it's generally accepted that generations of famine in N. Korea have resulted in men and women from S. Korea being on average, three inches taller than their counterparts in N. Korea. Some sources place the figure at more like five inches.

Realize that both Koreas have basically been untouched by foreign genetic pools for centuries--they are (were) basically the same people before the Korean War. The biggest reason is the N. Korean babies don't get adequate nutrition their first two years, nor do they typically get truly decent food regularly later on in life.

S. Korean women are typically the same height or taller than N. Korean men. The exception is N. Koreans from top ranks of the communist party and later in their lives, those in the Military. The rest of people pretty much starve.

Personally I've always extremely picky with tattoos (and guys who have them) if it's well done and thought out I will love it BUT show me a guy with religious tattoos or a bunch of scribbles and names and I wish them good luck... that simply screams jail to me... or reggeton, which is almost as bad! do keep in mind that I am more of the artsy kind and I prefer rock over salsa for example, so it really comes down to personality.

Either way I would guess older women would be more hesitant to date someone with tattoos while the younger ones might think you are cool. Also wealthier girls might have a harder time dealing with their families until they meet you because they tend to be more old fashioned but should be ok once they get to know you and realize you are a decent guy who is in love with their daughter.

My wife is from Bogota. As far as a place for looking for a wife goes, it has a lot going for it.

As far as living there goes - the traffic kills it. 2 hours each way to the centre is normal.

As for ink - Colombian women all over don't like it in general. At least not the wife material ones. However that is a sweeping generalisation and also attitudes are changing. So I expect you will find plenty of women interested in you if you are actually in country.

What I would recommend is to be up front about it. You don't want to waste your time if she is going to be put off by the tatt. Also, in Bogota, wear a long sleeved collared shirt buttoned at the sleeves. This is not exactly to cover the ink, so much as to show that you are a civilised, respectful type. If everyone can see you are elegant and a smart dresser, they wont leap to the wrong conclusions about your ink. In fact this applies to all men - not just those with tatts.
