Years ago...after my first Colombian wife had been living in the U.S. with me a while. She commented on my family and made some not so flattering generalizations about American families in general.


We all live apart and communicate very infrequently (by Colombia standards). She talked to her mother once a day and I might talk to my mother once a week or maybe even a couple times in a month if I was busy. And when we finally did get together as a family (on the holidays) we tended to give each other [snip] from time to time and in general say things that most Colombianos would never say.... even if they believed them to be the absolute truth.


Her stated conclusion was that American families do not love their families as much as Colombian families do.

I pointed out that I didn't think that Colombian families loved their families more than American families but rather just needed them more. I suggested that if decent jobs were more plentiful ....more Colombians would gladly move out and live alone rather than be packed like sardines in a small house. I even suggested that if Colombia had welfare, food stamps and unemployment insurance that Colombians wouldn't spend nearly as much time up each others ass all the time because they would know that they could take care of themselves and not have to depend entirely on their families when things got tuff.


By now my wife was thoroughly offended and rightly so.....because if you gave her a lie detector test and asked her if she was the way she was out of necessity or out of love....the results would have come out squarely in favor of love.


These are not conscious choices Colombianos make and making cynical comparisons between them and us is pointless......even when it comes to women in their 20's marrying guys in their 40's......do you really think most of them think they have made a compromise.....or are they just doing what they do?

Now about these rose colored glasses.  Of course I have a good attitude and feeling about Colombian ladies.  I got a beautiful young woman in her mid 20’s trying to pop out kids for me left and right, she speaks English, she drives, she sometimes spontaneously breaks out in song and she is one helluva cook!  She has just developed a superb attitude overall, over the last several years.    Not too bad for an bald, aging, gasbag like myself, with enough past baggage to fill an airport.
Now let’s do a little comparison.   Zon, apparently flush with cash, full head of hair, no kids or commitments and what has he been able to muster up after 5 years of Colombian travels?  A negative impression of the ladies, an empty bed, and load of scared warm caca in his diaper.  Out of fear, he has over thought the entire process and convinced himself that the ladies are all out to get him for the wrong reasons.   He has figuratively put some more of his beloved bodyguards around his heart.  Some people just aren’t cut out to be with a woman I suppose. zon, have you thought of getting a pet chicken or something?  You could name him zon jr, and call him your kid and people would probably believe you and say he acts just like you, except he doesn't complain about colombian women as much as you!
