She wouldn't listen to me. Aparently I need to learn to respect Colombian laws. However recently she talked to a cousin. As a result she is going to see another notary. I resisted the temptation to say a thing.  ::)

VM -

In your other post you said something along the lines of "they think your the idiot,  because you said something about looking into other notarias" -  greatly paraphrased by me.  And now your above post where you said you refrained from making a further comment.  Do not feel too bad about it.  As the guys that really have time here will tell you,  and I believe that you have already gotten a good dose of it,  logic,  as most of us know it,  does not play here all that well.  You should respect the laws in Colombia, because the people that live here don't.  Anyone doubts that just come to Med and we will go on a little drive around town,  if we see one person stop at a stop sign,  I'll give you 50,000 COP (it will not count if they HAVE to stop because a bus is in front of them,  or they stopped to make a call on their cell or do makeup).  Keep doing what you HAVE to and just let the 'family' make the calls.  All easier said than done, as you will be the one holding the 'crap bag'  if things do not come off as you need.  Just keep thinking about getting to "the other side",  as the "process",  as you are living,  is just not that much fun.  Keep at it brother,  we are all pulling for you!  (and thanking God that it is not us).

Thanks Micky. I really appreciate it.
I learnt years ago that sometimes the best thing to do is just to keep my mouth shut.

Anyway now that I have a better plan in a 3rd country, I am relaxed about the Colombian civil wedding. She is FAR more motivated to get married at sunset on the beach in a tropical  country than in the registry office in Bogota. (Who would have thunk it). So if it happens in Colombia, it happens but neither of us are going to jump through lots of hoops for them. We'll just see how it pans out.

2. I had a child in a former life and now I have been told that I need to hire a lawyer through the courts in Colombia to create el inventario solemne de bienes. This process takes 3 months. Although that would be impossible for them to create since I have never owned a single thing in Colombia and I am not going to list my assets for some court registry in Colombia. Not in a thousand years. The concept of this is to try and protect a child's property from a new wife. However in practice that is deeply flawed even within Colombia. ???

Had to do the inventario for my kids as well, but it was a "simple" thing to find a similar document here, get it notarized and translated (actually, you're right that was the hardest document to get...  Never thought about simply stating that I don't have any kids, you're right, nobody would know :D

3. We are already going to a 3rd country after the big party. She doesn't need a visa. The requirements are simple. It is efficent, not expensive and simple. The certificate will be in English so I don't need to wait for an offical translated copy. I believe that from this country it will not even need to be aposilled. So, for me, it's a more valuable document in fact.

What's that 3rd country that doesn't require a visa for Colombian citizens?  It would be a godsend idea...  (PM me if you don't want to post publicly)

Cheers

The Bahamas.

It is ideal.
Colombians do not need a tourist visa.
It is English speaking.
The requirements for marriage are very simple. For many people you just need a passport and 24 hours after entering the country you can be married.
It is a memeber of the British Commonwealth so offical documents and certified copies will be recognised in other Commonwealth countries. I can't imagine our USA friends having any issues either, since so many of them do it.
Everything is setup and designed for tourists to come and get married there. It is a part of their economy. Hence it is friendly, easy and efficient. Plus there are many options and many people to help you do it.
There are a lot of travel and accomodation options.
It is a beautiful tropical destination. 8)

The el inventario solemne de bienes can kiss my fluresent white backside!

Yep, I'm a native Canadian from Montreal...  Would love to meet but Toronto is a tad far :)
