Monday thru Saturday she is owned by her employers who are real jerks from what I understand.  They won't let her watch TV, use her phone, computer or even read a book during the week.  She just texts me against their rules while they are gone to work.  And even though her contract says she is to be off work on Sunday they still make her work until 10am  and then say she has to be back by 8pm to clean up the house before bedtime.   So they give her exactly 10 hours off each week.

  That really sucks!

Part of the problem is that Filipinas generally try to avoid any kind of confrontation, so they are reluctant to demand their rights or confront their employers. And some employers will take advantage of this and step all over them. Those overseas jobs pay very well compared to their slim opportunities at home, so they often put up with a lot of crap sometimes to keep their job. I’m not sure what those domestic-help jobs pay these days, but they used to run around US $400/mo.

In contrast, we had one member here some years ago who went to Hong Kong to visit his Filipina pen pal, who also worked as a domestic helper for a Chinese couple.

I guess her contract was very similar to what your girl is working under, but these employers were very nice and went out of their way to accommodate her when her American friend came to visit her. They let her have extra time off while he was there and even met with him.

They became friends and stayed in touch with the Chinese couple after she completed her contract and moved to the States to marry her American fiancé. The couple even met up with her previous Chinese employers when they visited the US on vacation, showing them around their home town.

So, I guess your girl got a bum deal with her present employers. Not all of the domestic employers are a-holes like the ones you described.

She’s been with the same employers for three years? How much longer does her current contract run? Does she have any vacation time coming up in the near future?

So  I figure I should wait until she has some vacation time to go see her...   don't want to spend $3000 on a plane ticket and travel 18 hours across the pacific to spend 10 hours with her.

Hey Strata!  I’m glad you received some solid advice from Ray, and didn’t get babied like some posters prefer.

I usually post on the latin side, but thought I would offer up some possibilities that may or not may not be feasible for you.   It appears that the lady you like is in a position where you two can’t see each other because of her work, which may not end anytime soon.  Well if you continue to feel strongly about her and want to take a chance, maybe you could offer up the money for her to pay a substitute nanny for a week.  Don’t know if the family would accept such a thing, but it probably wouldn’t be that much extra cash, and at least this way you could see the lady and see if you would like to continue to pursue her, instead of having to wait for a vacation that may come in 9 months.  For me, I would rather take my chances and fork out a few extra bucks early, then waste months communicating with a lady I haven’t met, and can’t be too sure about.
Good luck with the lady!

Inday,
Two different situations. The chat mate first gave up contact for lent. Secondly was a suggestion to visit in Hong Kong with the warning that her employer would only allow time off on Sundays to see visitors.
