Should you be willing to change your habits or give up hobbies/activities for your spouse?

Of course, marriage is about working together and that requires changing habits/hobbies/activities
Sure, to a certain degree. But if something is really important to you or ingrained in you, they should learn to live with it. It's part of you.
No, you should go find someone with more similar interests/habits.
Give up hobbies, sure, but you can't change habits

But does she understand the cultural linguistic metaphor for that?  Maybe she thought you wanted to get into kinky cross-dressing games.    Now she's wondering what kind of perv she's married to.  "Guess what, mom!  He offered me to wear his trousers!  I don't know why, but I'm going to keep close track of my underwear when I get to America."   ;D

  That's exactly what I was thinking!   :D

HOLD ON STOP THE PRESSES STOP THE PRESSES ! ! !
I'm sorry did you say "allow you" ??????????????????????????
is this woman going to be your wife or your mom ?
do you like to be lead ?
on the morning after my wedding i reached into my suitcase & pulled out a pair of my pants. I laid them on the bed & asked my new wife who will wear these? she looked at me not exactly understanding the question
i then said "Who will wear the pants in our family?"
she said "oh you will" & i responded "are you sure?" she then said "yes"
my wife expect me to lead & i expect for her to give me her input.
however when the rubber meets the road the final decision is mine.
& as long as things turn out well I look good
if they don't turn out so well ...........i better keep the # to the local flower shop handy ;)

You replied, "I can't get into them."

I've known a lot of Asian women who manage the family budget. Maybe it's less common with Filipinas? I think Jeff mentioned his wife manages the budget and gives him a certain amount of money to spend on toys. I don't know whether it's more of a Japanese thing or a Chinese thing or both.

My fiance would probably control the budget when she got here. Doesn't really bother me. She's about a hundred times more frugal than me and will go to fairly extreme lengths to get a good deal. And if my impulse buys and fine foods/alcohol budget was reined in it would probably save enough a month to support her.

Not exactly. She manages the home budget and pays the bills, and if I need something, like clothes, kitchen stuff, or whatever for the home, there's always money for it. I manage the business finances so allocate from there for hobbies and travel. She's also frugal, but we both like nice things and would rather buy quality than cheap. She asks before making any major purchases - over $100 or so, and I've never turned her down.

Come on piggy!!!

it went down exactly like i said
we had already talked about it & she had on more than 1 occasion said that she would be a "good follower". so i figured this meant she wanted to follow me. i know some ladies find it hard to trust/respect a man if he isn't willing to take the lead. I'm not sure about other country's but many ladies in the PI are like this IMHO.

From everything I've seen and read, Taiwanese people for the most part have zero hobbies and take extremely short, cheap vacations. As far as I can tell they are about the cheapest people on the planet. Even more-so than Chinese.

Hey jm,

98% of Taiwan's population is made up of Han Chinese ("New Taiwanese") and the remaining 2% are Taiwanese aborigines. The Hans have contributed much to  humanity in the areas of science and technology...but I have never heard anything about their contribution to humor and comedy.  ???  Filipinos are descended from the Taiwanese aborigines and God they are a whole lot of fun!  ;D

I found the people in China to be much more laid back than Taiwanese. I think due to Japanese and western influence and due to having been a very rapidly developing country the last 50 years or so, as well as the firm dictatorship of Chang Kai Shek, there's a different attitude. There's much more of a follow-the-rules-and-work-your-ass-off attitude.

The "true" aboriginal population is quite small, but there was a significant amount of inter-marriage and the children typically identify as Han Taiwanese rather than aboriginal.

Most Chinese humor I don't really get, but it's out there and getting better. Just a lot of it seems childish from a western perspective. Goof ball sort of slapstick humor. Some of Stephen Chow's stuff is really good though.

LOL

I did compromise in the music department in a major way

Before Gerlie I never followed Pop music more than I had to

Since she is so good about my metal, I allowed her to get me addicted to American Idol :P  LOL

H

Hey H,

I was fortunate in that area...my wife is more of a rocker than the average Filipina.  ;D No Backstreet Boys or Justin Bieber for me. I did watch some American Idol, but she only watched it if she was flipping through the channels and it popped up.  My musical tastes are much more eclectic and extreme and includes many musical genres.

I was at a wedding the other day and lent some badly needed background vocals. I started on a cover of the Bee Gee's "How Deep Is Your Love" (tough to do a falsetto with my bass vocals) and finished the set keeping my pimp hand strong, by filling in for the late Ike Turner on a cover of their version of "Proud Mary." While my voice wasn't too bad, regrettably, I will never have hair as cool as Ike! I could always buy a wig! My wife was disappointed that I didn't do a love ballad for her from one of her favorite 80's Hair Metal Bands! I may have to buy another wig for that! ;D

I guess I have actually compromised too, since my wife has introduced me to 80's Glam and Hair Metal music. I have even listened to Bon Jovi CD's with her and saw them in concert (thankfully it was free!)  ;D

If you go to the Philippines there is a good chance that you have to do a round of karaoke. On a few of the songs I sucked but I did get 100% for "Hotel California".     ;)

Cool pic Dave...I knew that you were always cool but I didn't know that you used to have a 'fro.  ;D

Hey JM,

Funny, I was just talking about this with some Filipino-Chinese friends the other day. They (as have others in the past) told me that their parents or grandparents from  mainland China are very serious, strict, and a bit of a pain in the "A." They said that if there is some Filipino blood, the children tend to be much more mellow than the pure Chinese offspring. Many Filipino-Chinese still insist that their children marry the same, especially the daughters. By outward appearances, even many of the mixed ones look like they just stepped off the boat from China. While many of descendants became Catholics, there is a very large Buddhist Temple a few blocks from my house.

I was told that Koreans are even a bigger pain in the "A." Something that I can personally attest to! Although, the Korean women that I have met have been quite nice. Koreans are now the largest foreign group in the Philippines. Many come as "tourists" or  to "study English" and decide to stay. Paradise is shrinking fast!

Re:

>>Koreans are now the largest foreign group in the Philippines<<

Wow, that's food for thought---I knew their numbers were increasing, but I had no idea. Is that according to the RP govt?

I guess a lot of the pure blooded Chinese who are second generation, with families, aren't counted. Are Indians the third largest foreign group there?
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!
