the double barrel 12GA sounds quite effective for any unwanted "guests"
i myself like the sound the pump makes though
everyone knows what that sound is & just hearing it may scare off some of the undesirable types.
less mess to clean up & less paperwork for the cops once they decide to show up.

I have the rest of my guns in a $159 walmart gun safe (it's lag bolted to the wall)
nothing fancy but it does keep honest people honest.

for quite a while walmart had a deal on 15 packs of 2 3/4" OObuck
every time i went in the store i grabbed a couple boxes
however when i got up to about 300 shells i figured i had enough
i also stocked up a little at a time on rounds for my rifles
after all without ammo guns become nothing more than crowbars

The soldiers in the deserts were using their .223 carbines in CQB work, and found it just wouldn't knock the bad guys down ALL the time, EVERY time.

  In fairness, Jedironin,  the bullets being used are full metal jacket, which is 100 year old (or more) technology.  The results might be different with a better bullet design, such as the hunting rounds you can buy today at WalMart.  I am not so sure the 5.56 bullet is a problem in and of itself, so much as the fact that the military is forced to use a non-expanding bullet design.
While .308 is nice, and it is a standard sniper round, a 7.62 mm weapon, like the M14, is extraordinarily difficult to control on full auto, which is why it is now mainly relegated to marksmen and snipers.

Just a guess--and Jeff may not even 'let off' as to whether or not his Japanese wife carries a handgun, I'd guess she prefers not to and while trouble can happen anywhere, it's very remote that she's likely to be anywhere near where it's likely to happen.

Even if that were to occur, Jeff would probably be right there and if Chuck Norris  was by chance, getting a wee bit too fiesty with Jeff's wife, he'd have trouble too!

No pinays in my house. I took my wife and daughter shooting when they first came here. They enjoyed it, but had no interest in continuing. They have a complete disinterest in my shooting now - no problem with me going, just no interest in participating.

Piglet, I am close to Atlanta, but New Hampshire has probably the best gun laws in the nation.  No license needed at all to carry openly, you can carry into a police station or an elementary school or the airport (not beyond the metal detectors, obviously), or basically anywhere else you want to.  The license is only for concealing, costs $10 bucks, takes only 14 days, and they issue to residents of other states, too (for $90 more).

It does not ask anything about immigration status at all.  More information is here.  http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/newhampshire.pdf  Apparently they made some administrative rule making parts of the Capitol Complex off limits, in addition to courtrooms.
