Mars
« on: May 03, 2009, 10:11:43 PM »
something that hasn't happened in over 5000 years and is not expected to happen for 60,000 years after this event in occurring over the next 4 months.  Mars is coming it's closest to the Earth and will achieve that awesome event on August 28th.

Why is this so awesome?

1) Mars will be at least 6x larger in the sky than it currently is and will replace Venus as the 3rd brightest celestrial body for the next 8 months.

2) This will be the first recorded time in history since the last time was over 5000 years ago.  No man has ever witnessed/recorded this event.

Mars will rise about 10 PM and set about 3:30 AM so you'll have to be up late to see it but it will not be difficult and you'll get plenty of opportunities.  Starting last week it will steadily grow until August 28th and then start receding back to it normal size. and is occurring because of the elliptical orbit of Mars will be at its closest during that period.

This has nothing to do with the massive celestrial events to occur on Dec 21, 2012

I think that this is the last day in the Mayan calender
maybe the guy building the calanders for the Mayans just got lazy & decided to not make anymore for them?
i guess we will all know in a few more years.

I'm not taking any chances...I am buying a bag of Mars Bars and making a tin foil hat.  My friends will rescue me.

Ah, no.

Mars was at its closest approach on August 28th,

in 2003.  If you didn't see it then, you missed it.  It will not be that close again till 2287.

I remember it fondly.  I was in Japan at the time, and me & another teacher were walking back from a bar, setting off firecrackers in parking lots, and looked up.  Despite the glare if city lights, there it was in all its bright orange glory.

It makes a close approach about every 2 years.  Its next close approach is ~January 27th of 2010, but it won't be as close as it was in 2003.

Will I see Schwarzenegger up there?  ;D
Let's hope so.  Anything to get him out of Sacramento.

I don't know about Mars, but on any given night one can venture outside without pants and the full moon will be visible. If you bend over, one can see Uranus.
