Getting foreign citizenship through marriage
« on: March 25, 2014, 08:34:00 AM »
This has been discussed a bit on Asian and Latin forums and it not only varies from country to country, but apparently you have to renounce your US Citizenship to get foreign citizenship and it's a pain to get it back later if you change your mind.

Not only that, but as my wife pointed out, you might just want to forget about collecting Social Security down the line, think about losing your health care plan and other things...Plus, you have to live in the Philippines continuously for five years--I don't think I could go that long w/o decent pizza or a good cheeseburger--if not married to a Filipina, it's ten years. If you leave once, the clock starts ALL over again. And I'll bet it costs money.

Guess you really can't have your cake and eat it too....

Under Philippine law, if we wish to become Naturalized in the Philippines, and be a citizen of the country, we must renounce our US Citizenship as part of the process.  It’s the same for your wife, if she takes the oath as a US Citizenship, she is renouncing her Philippine Citizenship as part of the process.  The good thing for your wife is that under the Philippine Dual Citizenship law, she can re-acquire her Philippine Citizen and be a citizen of both countries.  The US does not offer such a procedure.  If you renounce your US Citizenship, there is no easy way to reacquire your US Citizenship. There are some conflicting opinions on all this, so I'd guess calling the US State Dept. (have fun there) and asking to get it in writing if that's even possible, would be best.
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Unless you want to run for political office or own property in the Philippines, there is no reason to give up your citizenship to become a Filipino citizen.

If you are married to a Filipino citizen or former citizen, and just want to live there without the hassles of renewing a visitor visa, then there are other options.

You can stay up to a year at a time on a balikbayan visa as long as you travel with your wife.

Or if you wish to live there permanently, you can apply for an immigant visa and live there as a legal resident. You can apply through a Philippine consulate here before you go. It cost $150 and takes a couple of weeks or so to process if you qualify. This visa will allow you to work there.

I honestly had no idea it was that easy to get papers for an immigrant visa, including a work visa. Does that pertain to single Kanos, as well as to guys who are married to Filipinas?

I suppose an American citizen getting a permit to work there is an entirely different thing than being able  to open a business there and work it. Johhny B and I were so excited when we read this, we're already thinking of locations for our combination Motorsicle Repairo-Cheeseburger Supremo Palace!

I can almost smell the diesel and leaded gas fumes wafting in already! We'll be filthy rich!

Thank you, Jhengsman. I was wondering about the deposit details. At the risk of sounding dumb, how long is the 'required time deposit' tied up for? I am not sure where it goes, but I am a bit leery of Filipino banks...

I don't know I just ran across it on a consulate website when renewing her passport. Anyway it seems the goal is to get foreign currency and I am guessing the cash deposit in their bank is the bond which allows you to stay

If you are going to put your money in a Philippine bank, you might just as well flush it down the toilet...
