Ray,

Getting prices around $1250 from the west coast to Manila...everyone says this is now the high season for prices....three months ago it would have been $800.

Thanks,
Nathan

Yes, June through early Sept is “usually” the high season. Fuel costs aren’t helping any either.

Have you tried booking on-line directly with the airlines? I’ve seen occasional on-line ticket prices for PAL that even the consolidator agents can’t beat. A quick check of PAL shows $1148 from LAX/SFO until 10 Aug with a max stay of 2 months and some minor restrictions on travel days. They have similar rates from Vegas. They also have a $1000 fare if you want to wait until Nov-Dec.

You should also check Cathay’s 55+ fares for old farts. http://www.cathay-usa.com/55plus/subdefault.asp

Are any airlines charging fuel surcharges this year?

Watch www.nwa.com, as they have some excellent prices from here on the east coast when they run their asia sale. I have paid about $1600 to $2200 each time for round trips from Florida to Manila. I since discovered from listening to others who frequent Manila that if you are signed up on that website they will email you special promotions. A friend here took the same flight I have always taken under the promotion and it was about $750. A lot less than I have paid in the many trips before. I have 176,000 shy miles with Northwest, so I am waiting for the next promo to back and see my wife again.

I know that all the airlines I regularly use are charging fuel surcharges.  These being Air Canada, Mexicana and CopaAir.  I don't believe Avianca is, but not 100% sure.

Is it payable when you purchase your ticket, or do they hit you up when you check in for your flight? What are examples of how much they are charging recently?

Thanks

They add it on when you purchase the ticket.  An example I recall was Air Canada flight Montreal to Bogota and Montreal to Havana were about $135 & $120, and the ticket prices before hand were $950 and $550.

I've never been hit up at a check in counter for fuel surcharges, is that common in the US?

In Banaue, travelers have the choice to take the day off and trek along the well-engineered Banaur Rcie Terraces or take a jeepney ride to Bontoc and from there, one time can catch a bus ride to a more tranquil region, Sagada in Mt. Province.
