My house was broken into
« on: September 12, 2010, 03:19:47 PM »
A word of advice for all living here in the US. About a month ago my home was broken into and I was robbed while I was at work. They took electronics, guns, cash, DVDs, and almost everything of any value that was pawnable.

Write down all of the serial numbers and take pictures of anything and everything that you own that has value to you. I had just been home to Montana and brought back my great great grand fathers 45-90. It's one of Winchesters first repeating rifles and had been in my family for 5 generations; now its gone. I had just gotten it here and hadn't recorded any info on it so I suspect that its gone forever. The most disturbing part of losing it is that I'm sure whoever took it has no idea of the value of that rifle. It was last appraised at between 20 and $30,000.00. I'm sure whoever took it sold it for $50.00 to get whatever drug is their current choice.

Get an alarm if you have valuables at home, record serial numbers, take pictures of your valuables, and if you rent get renters insurance. Computers will be stolen if this happens, so do not store your passwords in your computer, make certain that any electronic banking that you do is totally secure and requires that whoever uses the accounts has to know the passwords. DO NOT let Internet Explorer store them for you.

I think a lot of us have been thinking, or even planning to do this, but we've just 'never quite got around' to doing it.

Once it does--and it can happen in any neighborhood--it's pure and simply too late.

There's a much better chance of getting your stuff back if you have photos, serial #'s etc. also kas said, eep your credit card info a safe place should you lose all your cards and ID's in one way or another.

Not just for the cops--but it'll possibly help w/ insurance too.

I did all that so long ago, I have to redo it all over again---thanks--I feel bad for what happened to you, but salute you for giving us a another 'wake up call'...
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Hey Bil,,

I am very sorry to hear that!

Living in South Florida, burglaries were a constant threat... a few neighbors even served as lookouts for the thieves! I caught a few thieves breaking into my neighbors houses and cars. Fortunately, for them, the police were very eager for action and always arrived within a few minutes. I had an alarm system, security cameras, extra door and window locks and braces, big dogs (very helpful), several warning signs, permanently marked valuables, had several safes, as well as a gun safe, motion sensor flood lights, and there was usually someone home. Several neighbors and I kept a constant watch on each others' houses.

I do the same thing in the Philippines since I am already used to doing it. Knock on wood, but we haven't had problems in a year and a half. All of my neighbors have been burglarized at least once during that time. Several known thieves have criticized my setup to others, saying that it was overkill...exactly my intention!  ;D It was made known to them that if they got in, they wouldn't be walking out!  ::)

Ha ha, Dave--I hear the lights around your house are so bright at night that they can't even see there's a house there and the thieves who know there is one, are so blinded by the light, that they're afraid of what might be 'behind the light'.

Overkill? Maybe they're afraid they'll end up looking worse than 'road kill' if they make a wrong move!

Hey Rob,

These Mamanwa were afraid of my flood lights when they suddenly came on as they were about to pass by one night. They turned around and ran away! They would only come back in daylight. They said that my lights looked like the sun!  8)

Doh!  Same here.  I had those serial numbers at one time, but for stuff that has long since been replaced and upgraded.  I need to do that again ASAP.  Thanks for reminding me.

Hey Bill:

Sorry to hear of your troubles.  I've never been a victim of a burglary...I can only imagine the awful feeling of being violated.  Especially losing items that are not only high-value monetarily, but high-value in a sentimental sense, as well.

If any of you folks use a "portable" GPS in your vehicle, remember to put it (and the mount) away when you park.  Lately, d-bags have been breaking into cars, but taking nothing.

However, they grab your GPS and determine your home address.  Now they know where you live and increase their likelihood of a successful residential burglary, because they also know what you drive.

So if you get into your hooptie, and it seems like things have been moved around, but nothing's missing...

Recording serial numbers might get your stuff back but from my experience, it’s a real long shot so don’t hold your breath. Those photos and videos will come in handy when hassling with your insurance company if you get ripped off. Keep receipts too!

I was hit twice by ILLEGAL ALIENS UNDOCUMENTED DEMOCRATS, along with almost everyone in the neighborhood. Everyone now has security bars and screens on their windows and doors.

Some illegals used to commute daily from Tijuana to burglarize homes and steal cars in San Diego and surroundings. Thanks to the new triple-layer fence and increased border enforcement, that nonsense has gone away entirely in recent years. So for any of your whiny-assed libs out there who claim that the fence won’t work, you all can kiss my hairy arse!

To give you the best chance of getting any of your stuff back, I would invest in one of those little etching tools for under ten bucks and etch your driver’s license number on everything that you can think of, including guns, tools, electronics junk, etc…  I got back one collector’s edition rifle 4 years after it was stolen because my driver’s license number was on it, along with the serial number that I reported stolen. It was recovered from some ILLEGAL ALIEN’S UNDOCUMENTED DEMOCRAT’S home during a police bust.

I also got back a boom box from the police who took it off of another ILLEGAL ALIEN UNDOCUMENTED DEMOCRAT 10 minutes after he stole it because my number was etched in it. The police can run the number from their car’s computer and get your name and address almost instantly.

Speaking of "ILLEGAL ALIEN UNDOCUMENTED DEMOCRATs"

Wait a minute...It looks like "the debate is over." Here is the proof the Democrats have been longing for! Hard to refute it!
