New, black, educated and considering Peru...
« on: March 24, 2010, 11:17:39 AM »
Hello Ya'll,

Another new guy to the site! I was joking with a cousin of mine about finding bride outside the U.S.. The more thought about it the more reasonable it seemed. Which has lead me to the site.

I am in my early 30's, African-American, about to graduate from medical school. I have two children 11 and 9 from a previous relationship. Sure I can find someone here but honestly, I am scared to loose all that I have worked for. Because, I went to school in the Caribbean for two years I know that men in other countries have a lot more stability in their relationships.

I have been checking out some all of the places men have been going to but I am most attractive to the Latinas. I am looking a lot a Peru because its a peaceful state, that I think I would visit even if I was not looking for a woman. I have two questions if anyone could help me I would really appreciate the help.

1. What have been peoples experiences in Peru?  Please, include what agencies you used.

2. Have you seen or black men going down to these places? If not do you think women would care? (Please note I don't want to get into a race discussion, its just an honest question.)

Thanks for your help.

Oh yeah, we have some black guys who post here who have had good experiences, both with Latinas and Filipinas, that doesn't seem to be much of a problem. Now, not presuming to tell you what you 'really want', because I have no idea, and even if I did, I certainly don't have the authority, but since you asked an honest question, I'll try to give you an honest answer. I've never been to Peru, but I understand that it's mostly Mestizo and a lot of pure Indians....In Colombia the ratio of blacks in the population is about what it is in the US, with some places having more than others (just like Mississippi has more than Missouri).

Question for you, how's your Spanish? It will come in handy in either place.

Welcome to the forum and good luck.

Hi Michaelb,

Thanks for replying. I only have high school Spanish which is something I know I am going to have to work on, this will give me the incentive I need to pick-up the language. I have seen some internet personal postings with women that claim to speak English and Spanish have you known this to be true?

Thanks for getting back to me.

Well, my X, from Costa Rica, speaks and writes English better than a lot of the people on this board. My current, from Colombia, can't (read won't) go into an English speaking grocery store, after 6+ years here.....so it really varies from person to person. For the women whose postings you have seen, only by responding to them can you tell for sure. Go for it! One way to practice is to watch Spanish shows on cable TV. Sabado Gigante is a fairly good variety show that is available in most markets, and  there are always plenty of 'novelas' (soap operas). At first they will be too fast and have too many words you won't catch, but little by little you'll pick up some. When I was studying Spanish, forty years ago, we would have killed to have Spanish TV like we do now to practice with.

Being black shouldn't make any difference in Latin America - being educated sure will. You'll be considered a real prize.

I have never met anyone in Colombia who could speak any English. I had some papers translated by a government-certified translator in Medellin. I was sure I would be able to speak English with him. No, I had to speak Spanish. My wife's kids had taken English in private school for years - they couldn't speak a word. People claim to have met Colombians who can speak English. I've spent a lot of time there and I have yet to meet one. Sure they'll claim they can speak English but once you start, you realize "Hello" and "Goodbye" are the only two words they know.

I'd love to meet her just to break my experience to date. How did she learn English may I ask? And how did she maintain that proficiency?

welcome

I have 2 very good friends that are both AA and have wife's from Colombia one has been married and has a wonderful child for over 5 years and the other is just starting his life with a Latin. So your skin color will not matter at all to the Latin women so do not worry about that. As far as Peru i would contact Raul Tarabotto from matchingsys.com if you are looking to Colombia i would contact Jamie at latin-wife.com. As far as Peru you will find less AA men and women in Peru then you will find in Colombia. But do not let that stop you if Peru is the way you want to go....
You have a few options on how to proceed. first you need to determine what country and type of women you are looking for. then you can do a few things log on to a few of the on line dating sites latinamericancupid.com. and so forth or you can contact one of the many agencies and follow there leads. before you do any of this read some of the many post on this board and do you home work. i repeat do your homework. take it slow and ask many questions there are many guy's on here including myself that have done it right the first time or made many mistakes.. remember there are no experts only a lot of opinions... the guys on here will help you any way you want. just ask and do not think that the question you are asking is stupid. Once again do your home first read a lot of the posts and learn from our mistakes... (those that made them) fell free to PM me if you want to discuss more then the board has to offer . i am no expert but i have been to Colombia, and Peru many times and both locations are very beautiful and very different.

Best of luck to you and welcome to the board.

She studied english in the university and then when she graduated, she continued her studies on her own.  She even did a translation business on the side to earn extra money.  When I first was in contact with her, we used a webcam every night for at least an hour each day, so that helped as well.  The other two women I know in Medellin who speak English almost as well as her each studied in the university and they both claim to have watched TV in english to help their comprehension. I can only tell you that they had a desire to learn the language and have stuck with it. When I first met my former novia, I was amazed at her level of English.I guess it goes to show what someone can do when motivated.

Thanks for your help Ray,

I would not have looked at either sight with out your suggestion. I looked at latin-wife.com, it seems nice. Jamie has a lot of good explanations on his sight and everything is included. But, honestly do wonder about safety. Has anyone felt unsafe in Columbia?

The other website you suggested also has some good in information. Peru actually looks like a place I would go just to see the Indian Ruins. Both sights mentioned that race would be a small factor, but I am not detoured. I figure I will make a trip down to either place this fall.

Thanks again for the help.

helios5, welcome!

I am new to P-L also!  I would recommend the Philippines for a sweetie and potential wife.  They speak English there, and they love Americans of all skin colors.

Relationships are difficult to establish and that is made even more when there is a language barrier.  I started my search out looking for a latin babe, i dated a Columbia and a Venezuelan, (both 10's) in college, I was tutoring English!!  :D, but now I'm in my 40's I have little or no desire to learn another language just to flirt with a woman!

The filipinas are so varied you can get all skin colors, and a diverse mix of looks from chinese, japanese, spanish, european, to many mixtures in between etc., its a melting pot of beautiful young women and they speak English pretty decent.

Many other men have followed our path from latinas to filipinas!  Check out heruamens posts!

Look at my avatar picture, both filipinas!  Now thats variety!!

I found a young filipina student, very attractive, decent english skills, good person so far and it took me about 3 months!

Good luck!

hello.. my characteristics are similar to yours... black, educated and open to new experiences.. after approximately three years of travelling to colombia my suggestion would be to try latinamericancupid.com and use online translation software to get your feet wet. the attitudes regarding race varies from place to place in latin america but generally must less important than those in the united states.

their is no substitute for personal experience. join latinamericancupid and send "expressions of interest to women from a variety of latin american countries and gauge the response yourself.

i have no knowledge of peru... but if colombia is scary, add honduras, the dominican republic and brazil to your itinerary.

good luck!

Helios5,
On my first trip to Peru I divided the time between visiting historical sites and meeting women.  There's plenty to do and see and that is all available with a Google search. If you know some Spanish you can set up some meetings ahead of time over the internet with www.latinlovesearch.com or www.latinamericancupid.com.  Get some phone numbers and a place to stay in Lima, preferably Miraflores.

I haven't been to Peru.  In Latin America I have been to Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia.   I have spent time with African American guys in all three locals, and they seem to do pretty well for themselves with the ladies in all three locations.  You might have meet a little more initial resistance but only up until they find out A) You are from the USA. B) You have money C) You are educated. After they learn those 3 things you should be golden. Actually if you just have B) you are probably set no matter where you go in the world  ;D

Some might not like the idea of that you have children and be afraid you are only looking to find yourself a free nanny/maid.  Nothing that you can't get past with good communication.

Motivation, desire, and a need are the keys! I know MANY Latins in Miami who speak very little English, even after living there for over 50 years. You would be amazed at the number of Latins who were born in Miami and sound like they just stepped off the banana boat!
