question for people sending money down
« on: July 06, 2007, 01:02:22 PM »
This is sort of a non-issue to me, but I'm curious and am going to play the devil's advocate. A lot of you have rationalized it by saying that the women were contributing to the household before they left so it's only natural that they continue to do so. What would have happened if they married a latino and started a family down there? Surely they wouldn't continue putting money in to their parents' household?

Sure they would...or they would bunk up under the same roof as yours if you were a latina living near their home.  Offspring of Familia supports the older generation regardless in the cases of my experience;  there probably would be higher financial expectations if she marries a gringo, however.  My first gal I dated from Colombia will always send her Mom a few bucks....it's an act of love, which I admire...and the older generation may tend to live a LONG time, into their 90's!

Well....for me it was "can we do it", not "should we do it".  Some people, no matter what race or nationality, help out their family when they can....and enjoy doing it at the same time.  It's kinda hard to say "I love you and I'm here for you...but I don't love you enough to help you when I can".

I'm not talking about helping lazy people or people who want to take advantage of you (or your wife)...but people I love, people she loves......family, who's not as financially well off as we are.  We both hold the same values....if we can help someone who honestly needs it, we will be more than happy to do it.  The way we see it....The Lord has blessed us enough to be able to help other people.  Thats a good feeling to have. We know that all we have is not ours to begin with...but its put in our care and supervision.   Hopefully within the next 3 or 4 years or so, we will be able to buy her mother a house of her own (The Lord willing.)

I'd say if she's financially able to help her family, she will want to no matter where she lives or who she's married to.  The key word being..."if".  I mean...who wouldn't want to help out their loved ones if they could?  I guess it boils down to how someone looks at money and possessions.

I'm an good son-in-law who has been blessed with the world's greatest mother-in-law and in-laws. 8)

My novia only contributes to the "daily duties" in her home (cleaning, cooking, etc).  She doesn't give any cash so I wouldn't assume she would ask me to do the same.  That topic is on my list for my Aug. trip.  I am somewhat guilty of giving gifts to her family.  I know they will miss me bringing those bottles of Duty Free Liquor when she finally moves here with me!   jajajaja

Good luck! And I've been meaning to say this for a while but you and your wife look great together.
