It is possible to install vonage and get a local US number that will allow your girlfriend to call you for free and for you to call her...I highly recommend  www.ooma.com instead it is cheaper and better than vonage....don't get any upgrades and it is virtually free for the service.

Vonage is a scam.  If you ever try to cancel, they simply won't let you.  If you Google Vonage complaints,
that will cure all thoughts of using them.

http://www.magicjack.com/

Should be $50 (or less) to buy the unit, and then $20/year.

You can get it at radio shack, and probably some other places now.

The phone calls will be free.  It does require an internet connection and a computer.

The magic jack goes into a USB port on the computer, and the phone line connects into the magic jack.

I had MagicJack and did not care for it all that much. It dropped calls on me quite a bit. A couple of weeks ago, I bought and started using:

Net Talk

This is a cool device that has everything MagicJack has but it does not need a computer to work. Like MagicJack, however it does require an Internet connection and also an Ethernet switch. The price up front is about $20 more than MagicJack and about $10 more per year. It is also portable like MagicJack where you can take it with you and plug it into a USB port on a laptop, for example.

To call Colombia, which I do not need to do very often thanks to Skype, I use a phone service called Pingo. When my minutes expire here, I will switch to using Net Talk's International minutes. All seem to have comparable calling rates.

Thank you guys for replies.

My main concern is to be able to get a local number in Colombia, so if people will be calling this phone in Colombia, it will be a local number for them, and vice versa.  Apparently Vonage doesn't offer this.  Do any of those other services offer a local number in Colombia?

Many thanks in advance!

Traveller, a number in Colombia is a different animal indeed.

I'm not familiar with anything that does that.
Not that the other services don't.  If they do, I'm just not familiar with it.

Buena Suerte :)

If you want a local Colombian number you can buy a DID and use skyp to recieve the calls anywhere in the world including Colombia.

If you don't know what a DID is google it.
