Cultural Integration
« on: February 05, 2011, 11:43:11 PM »
Anyway, today at my rugrat's Saturday Japanese school, it was parents' observation and participation day and Mamemaki.  Some of the fathers (including yours truly) dress up as Oni (demon ogres) while the kids throw nuts at us while shouting "Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi (Oni go out, Luck come in)!."  Normally you're supposed to use soy beans, but with so many small kids, they decided peanuts were cheaper and less likely to cause a choak hazzard for the toddlers and small kids.
After a while it became a free-for-all with the assembly room floor covered in crushed peanut shells.

So, what crazy or interesting thing did you have to do as part of your spouse's traditional cultural celebrations?  Join any carnival parades?  Nail yourself to a cross?  Do tell and post pics!

Easter Salubong. An old Filipino tradition.

That's where we went to our local church in the middle of the night (well, 5:30 am) on Easter morning for a candlelight procession around the church and adjacent shopping center parking lot.

The guys go in one direction and the females in the other so you meet up and do a bunch of prarers and stuff. It was COLD out there.

The little kids dress up in angel costumes and lead the procession.

There were probably a hundred or so pinoys there and 3 Amerikanos including yours truly. Sometimes its tuff being married to a Filipina. I already have an excuse to get out of it this year.   :D

Hey Bob- watch out for those box-headed demons! They can be real trouble!  ;D
Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash and I'm delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever.

The Songkran Water Festival in April- I posted photographs of the immense nationwide water fight a couple of years ago. In the US , there is a scaled down version held at the local Thai temples. Primarily for the under 21 set here in the states.
