Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Ga. - A U.S. Marine reservist collecting toys for children was stabbed when he helped stop a suspected shoplifter in eastern Georgia.

Best Buy sales manager Orvin Smith told The Augusta Chronicle that man was seen on surveillance cameras Friday putting a laptop under his jacket at the Augusta store.

When confronted, the man became irate, knocked down an employee, pulled a knife and ran toward the door. Outside were four Marines collecting toys for the service branch's "Toys For Tots" program.

Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of them, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back. The cut did not appear to be severe.

The suspect was transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken leg, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions and assorted lacerations including a broken nose and jaw...injuries he sustained when he fell trying to run after stabbing the Marine.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was held until police arrived. The Richmond County Sheriff's office said it is investigating.

Sounds like quite a fall. Tough luck on his part! Glad the Marine wasn't hurt too badly.

I'm sure those helpful marines were doing all they could to assist this poor perp.

They make very slippery concrete in Ga, and quite hard, he needs to file a complaint.

In Chicago, that's called a "tuneup."

Physically fcuking with ANY young soldiers, especially jarheads is STRONGLY discouraged.

I've read three versions of this story here in GA, and none actually describe the perps injuries so I suspect someone took a little "poetic license" with that part of it, but the rest is totally true. Also the perps mug shots don't show any bruising or facial damage, but the mug shot I saw may have been from a prior arrest, who knows.

Regardless, its what he gets for bringing a knife to a Marine fight the bone head...

I recall reading a news story a year or two ago about 2 or 3 people who tried to mug a Marine. One of them had a shotgun... The Marine kicked the shotgun away and proceeded to take the fight to the guys with a knife. He killed one and put the other one or two guys in the hospital.

Just goes to show when Marines are involved, you can't even bring a gun to a knife fight!  ;D
Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash and I'm delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever.

You would be amazed how badly someone can be injured in a short fall! I used to go to the local jail  on a regular basis to treat suspects that fell in the jerky elevator on the way up to the booking desk.  ::)
