Probably the best (non-flying / non-trading) job I ever had was with a company in Chicago. A REALLY hard-core team, I swear, we could fix ANYTHING. Male / Female, Young / Not-So-Young, American / H1-B, Black / White. We really broke the mold.
But we maintain a professional demeanor. We had a Lab, where we would generally eat lunch and watch Simpson’s tapes. Of course we would all laugh, and people would peek in to see what the hilarity was all about. Over time we got a bit of a reputation, so as the Group Leader I made a decision.
LUNCH with I.T.
Once a month we’d pull two names out of a hat, and treat two non-technical associates to lunch at a sports bar, off the property. After a little while, we had a reputation as being the “shiznitâ€. On a regular basis, we’d get 300-400 entries a month.
Good times…and they were GOOD.
One day, there’s surprising news in the group. Joe and Jane are in BIG LOVE. No one (including me) ever saw it coming (no pun intended). They’re gonna go to Vegas and make it happen.
Everyone else in the group is single, so 16 of us (eight “couplesâ€) decide to go along for the “rideâ€. That leaves 12 bodies to take care of business, but Hey, it’s only a week.
A couple of days later, Joe & Jane do the nasty.

The next day two of the remaining “team†make an announcement. They marry the day after.
Now we’re three days in. On the fourth day, TWO MORE couples decide to throw caution to the wind, and take the plunge. NONE of these people were intoxicated, or suffered from diminished mental status. Not a single couple slept together or dated prior (besides Jane & Joe).
It’s been a few years now, and all couples are still together, and all with v.2 / v.3, and in one case v.4.
There IS hope for us sorry misfits. Whatever reason we’ve decided to take the path we chosen, let’s not sell ourselves short.
