five year thai driver's license

I am over here to get my driver's license renewed-among other things.

I related the hilarious process I went through last year.

This time was simpler. I went to the AEK Udon Hospital. Thai DMV has an office there.

The rather surly clerk sent us upstairs for me to get a physical. Blood pressure high, heart rate OK, overweight. About regular.. . .  About 30 minutes later, we get a doctors report. "Strong, Powerful white male. Good to have driver's license." Flattery . . .  now we figure that we will have to pay alot for this real physical since the previous "hello and pay" physical cost two hundred baht. Pleasently surprised- only 100 baht.

Back to the DMV- closed for lunch.

Finally- the souvenir like thai driver's license is replaced with the 5 year regular driver's license. Cost for DMV is 30 USD and the Driving medical exam was THREE DOLLARS.

How much is the Thai Insurance for Strong Powerful White man?

I think it is about 400 USD a year- wife takes care of it. Or go without insurance since the only time you need to show it is when you have an accident or see the police. You pay a 200 baht fine directly to the officer and he lets you go.

Anyway, this strong powerful white man seldom drives since he has a weak helpless thai female to go head to head with the other drivers. Buddhists believe in reincarnation which might explain their suicidal tendencies


If you are at fault in an accident it is your duty to escort the injured to the hospital and pay for all the expenses as they arise. If you have insurance, your insurance agent does it- go to the hospital and pay as the bills are incurrred. If no insurance, the police will make sure that you do it and then negotiate your settlement with  the other party in the following weeks. Or- you can go to prison for a couple of years. . . .
