Just One Of those Days
« on: December 19, 2009, 06:58:53 PM »
I was having a wonderful day - I chatted with my girl & her family for about 6 hours today.

Then I went to do some shopping to avoid the upcoming the snow storm - when I came back is when the following happened:

First my hard drive failed on my new computer.
I tried everything - it is gone.
I tried recovering the files - no success.

I have extra hard drives at home but some of the files on there I really need.

I have everything backed-up on an external hd, flash drive or one of my laptops except the following - I was waiting for a data cable to arrive (on Tuesday) so I can transfer them to the laptop I am taking with me to the Philippines:
1 - About 60 GB of music I was planning take to the Philippines for my girl & her family.
2 - A folder/file with all her family info - names, age, relations, birthdays, etc.
3 - My bookmarks - Most my links to all the places/sites/shopping in the Philippines was on that HD.
4- A folder with all the names of the places/sites/shops to see, visit & shop in the Manila area.

I can replace the music - It will take me about 2-3 days to do that. But these 2 other folders will take me a little while as I have to try to remember them / where I got them from.

And while I was trying to recover my files & working on the hard drive - a water leak started from the apartment above me. The kid left the water running in his tub & went outside to play in the snow. The water leaked in my ceiling & the apartment next to me. Before I can say anything, the next door neighbor was already steaming mad, he was about to beat the [snip] out of the kid but the some people in the building intervene. The landlord ain't gonna be happy when she finds out on Monday.

Now I have to deal with the "wonderful" dell customer service people. ::)

Maybe when I calm down I will think of something.

Kfc,

If all else fails on recovering what data you can't get now, you might want to try this:

I know it sounds as strange as some Filipino superstitions, it has worked for some people. Take a ziplock freezer bag and put the hard drive in the freezer overnight.

There's no guarantee that it will work and I'd try other measures first. Guys I know who have had luck usually got just one chance to recover data before the HD up and died for good--so have your back up tools ready..

I am sure you probably shut the whole thing down cold, disconnected everything reconnected and tried getting it back up. If you get lucky any which way, you'll probably have one shot at recovering data.

Usually a HD that's gone REALLY  bad makes odd sounds--like an old phonograph needle on a bad album for a while before dying.

For tech questions, I like the search engines www.altavista.com  and sometimes www.dogpile.com

I got this in a quick look at Altavista:

FWIW, I froze my easily removed hard drive and it's inserter track in a baggie overnight and it started the next morning; with a little tapping and slapping to get it going. Lasted just long enough to copy everything I wanted on it.
When all else fails, freezing overnight is worthwhile.
But, I would try some less drastic approaches first

My condolences in dealing with Hell---oops, I meant Dell.

They're are ways the govt has for recovering data from even purposefully smashed hard drives, even burned ones. Acid's the really only effective way to remove all data. Even wiping a working HD clean--'formatting' it--leaves stuff that can be recovered by hi tech methods.

When I was doing the fiancee paperwork for our 'packet', my system went crazy and all our yahoo chat archives went nuts--going from print to some sort of undecipherable binary code. A real Imodium moment!

Back then, yahoo had all kinds of computer help rooms. I got in one and being totally bummed, I started saying how awful and nit picky the USCIS was to some guy in a Yahoo room. I even called them NAZIs!!

This is TOO weird!! The guy turned out to be with the Dept of Homeland Security--USCIS -- quite high up in the govt (probably trolling for bad guys) and he actually sent me a a program down load that wasn't supposed to be for non govt. employees. It saved my ass.

Stuff like this happens and it'll all work out and make it all sweeter in the end when it works out. (And it will!) The USCIS/Embassy guy in Manila who passed my wife's final interview sent her a lovely text congratulating her afterwards. They are people too--and often over stressed.

I have to give you a lot of credit for your having saved portions of your data. Your GF will surely understand if you lost and can't get back personal info data--that can be  gotten again and names, addresses, BDays and phone numbers should be kept on paper too anyway.

We can copy and print the heart warming letters you've posted here as well.

Hard drive crashing, flooding and a huge snowstorm coming?I would like to think that you've gotten most of your 'bad luck' out of the way and things will get better! You're going to have at least a couple more challenges outside the norm here in the overall process, "K" and I am positive that if this is 'the girl' for you, no matter what obstacles come up, it'll work out just fine. There's strength in numbers. People helped us and we've helped people and we'd be happy to help you!
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

I have heard about freezing a hard drive before but have never tried it. I may just do that as none of the other recovery "tools" are working.
I avoided calling dell & did an online chat with them, they will send me a new drive & all necessary software/drivers - they will even have a tech come & install the hard drive. I have install tons of hd before but this time I may just sit back & let them do it. hehe
I will try one more recovery method then do the freezing thing.  There is one other thing that I really need on there - about a month worth of Yahoo chat archive - all prior chats have already been back-up & saved on a disc & also on an external HD.

My girl came on 2 hrs ago & I told her what happen. I also took my cam to the window & showed her the snow falling & the 6 inches that is already on the ground. It is her first time seeing snow.

As for this girl - I think that she may/could be the one. Her response when I tell her something tell me so.  Not only am I chatting with almost every day. I have chatted with most of her family members. I have talk to her 4 sisters, most of her nieces & nephews, nephews wives, her cousins, her friends & neighbors. The only members of her family that I haven't chatted with are her 2 brothers - 1 in Bahrain & the other in the province taking care of the family farms.- I will me him when come to phil.
The good thing about chatting with her family members is that I discovered the "pecking" order. #1 on the list is the 2nd sister (the one who was in Singapore-she came back to Manila 2 days ago & will be there when I arrive in January). All her sisters are married  but that one is the only one without children

Now all that snow is heading towards Piglett up north.  ;D

I am tired now - let me get some sleep.
