Sorry to hijack the thread, but I had a question related to the topic.  I had a question about the physical that needs to be passed to get the visa to come to the United States.  I know the std's gonorrhea and chlamydia are very common in the Philippines.  Does it disqualify the girl to come to the United States if she were to have one of these STD's in her medical records?

Same question as Dave H had… Where did you get your information that these diseases were common in the Philippines?? Perhaps in a few localized locations where prostitution is prevalent, but certainly not in the Philippines as a whole!

Visa applicants in the Philippines will most likely not have a medical record to bring to the medical exam. They will be questioned extensively to determine if they have a history of certain diseases or conditions, including STD’s, Tuberculosis, Leprosy, etc.

If the applicant has a significant communicable disease, they will be ineligible for a visa until treated.

Visa applicants at least 15 years of age are evaluated for STDs and have blood tests for HIV and syphilis.

A repeated positive HIV test will exclude the applicant from getting a visa, but I just recently heard that Pres. Obama rescinded the ban on immigrants with HIV/AIDS (?). Sounds like payback for the gay support in his election campaign(?).

Evaluations are also made for any symptoms or evidence of chancroid, gonorrhea, granuloma inguinale, and lymphogranuloma venereum. Further testing or treatment may be ordered.

Once treated, the fact that one tested positive for STD’s will not exclude the applicant from visa eligibility.

HOWEVER, a history of STDs may raise questions that can otherwise result in a denial. For example, a lady living in the Angeles City or Subic City areas, and having a history of STDs, may be suspected of prostitution and further investigations may be ordered. Evidence of prostitution is grounds for a visa denial.

When my father arrived in Manila in 1945 as a SeaBee to train for the mainland invasion of Japan, the Navy gave all the sailors a lecture about all of the local women having leprosy.

Back in my day, they gave all of the Vietnam soldiers before heading out on R&R, the "black VD" story condemning infected persons to having to live out the rest of their short, miserable lives aboard a ship circling the southern oceans forever, forbidden to ever make port for fear the disease would spread. You probably heard that one, too, Ray.

I did hear a story once about a guy who, after coming home from a wild time in the Thai brothels, discovered he had a stubborn infection that his doctor said required his organ to be amputated. He was shocked and went to three different doctors and all gave him the same prognosis.

He was drowning his sorrows in a few martinis with his friends, trying to decide what to do, when one of his friends suggested he try a Thai doctor, since he'd picked the disease up in Thailand. What did he have to lose, so he found a Thai doctor and told him his tale of woe. The doctor examined him, and proclaimed: "Cut, cut, cut - all these American doctors want to do is cut."

The man asked, "You mean you don't have to amputate?"

"Of course not," was the response.

The man was immensely relieved and asked, "What do I do now?"

The doctor said, "Go home and relax. In three or four days your pecker will fall off all by itself."

My father used to have original Sad Sack book from WWII (which has no word balloons, just the drawings). In one of the episodes we see Sack and several other soldiers being herded into a makeshift theater where they are forced to watch a film. The title of the film is something like 'Personal Hygiene, the opposite sex and YOU'. During the film, we see Sack recoiling in horror, holding his hands over his eyes and various other things which indicate that he's scared to death. After the movie, he's walking along, minding his business, when he meets a friend with a young woman. The friend introduces them and the woman smiles and holds out her hand. Being nobody's fool and having learned well, Sack holds up a finger in a 'wait a minute' type gesture. He reaches into his pocket, extracts a rubber glove, puts it on and then shakes hands with her.

Hey Jeff,

I forgot all about that one. Now I'm wondering if those poor souls are still circling aboard those ships?  ;D

I like the Asian way much better...no "Cut, cut, cut!"  :o
