Pics From Nuquí
« on: May 01, 2016, 05:55:00 AM »
Inspired by Expat's posts on Capurganá I dug up some pics from a trip to Nuquí in 2010. We stayed at the Piedrapiedra Lodge. You get to Nuquí on the pacific coast in a puddle jumper from Medellin then take an ocean going outboard down the coast forty five minutes to the lodge. It's a popular destination for whale watching when they're migrating.

Sunset views from the lodge.

The lodge

The beach by the lodge at mid tide (big tidal movement).

You can hike through the jungle to get to a clear running creek.

In a cave along the creek there was a Chocoan Bushmaster. Snapped a picture and got out fast.

Choco region of Colombia?  Those are great pictures.....especially with the lady in them....THEN you HAD to show us that damn snake!! I'm imagining frolicking about in that little pond with a babe, then coming face to face with that venomous thing, and crapping myself.
I may have to stick to swimming pools.   :P

Yes Chocó. I think it's my favorite region of Colombia though I lie the mountains a lot too. And don't worry, those Bushmasters are pretty rare. It was in a cave filled with bats. No doubt what it was feeding on. Very unlikely you'd bump into one while frolicking in the creek.

Nice pics!

You don't have to go to Colombia to tangle with venomous snakes. In the creek where we swam on our ranch we used to encounter cottonmouths regularly. In fact one of my daughters was bitten one time and we had to make a speedy trip to the hospital in Hondo while her whole arm swelled up from being bitten on the hand. We had coral snakes and western diamondback rattlers as well.

It recently flooded pretty bad here in Houston. It happens about once every two years now. Snakes are always one of the biggest problems when this happens......especially Water Moccasins (what we call Cottonmouths in Texas and Louisiana). I live 3 blocks from one of the biggest bayous in they city so we see a little of everything when the water levels get really high. Animal control had to remove a 4 foot alligator from someone's pool a block away from me after tropical storm Alison. I had at least 3 or 4 friends that killed moccasins found around their houses within the past couple of weeks. Although the aggressiveness of the snake is widely over exaggerated (every time I've encountered one while fishing, walking or biking along the bayou they slither away as fast as possible) they almost always bite people who are wading in flood waters if you're unlucky enough to run across one. Adults will usually survive, but for young children and the elderly a Moccasin bite is usually a death sentence if they don't get medical attention immediately.

Very nice pics Buencamino!

Yeah the problem with this Bushmaster is they're so big, up to twelve feet long and pack an awful lot of venom in their bite. The manager at the lodge said you have about two hours to get antivenin treatment other wise you're a gonner. He keeps it at the lodge.
