Speaking of PBH, for a while I used to post the links to the newspapers in Monteria and Sucre with translations of the crime stories. I did this every day and you should have heard them howl with rage - how I was slandering Colombia and Colombians etc etc etc And all I did was post the actual story along with a link to show that I wasn't making any of it up. The problem was this directly contradicted their little story that Colombia is so safe and nothing ever happens to anyone there. What a load of nonsense. They couldn't handle the truth!

I remember that. And it was ridiculous.

I don't know anything about PBH, but I found Mudd's posts here largely revolving around reporting crimes both small and large, down in Colombia sort of weird. Pretty much anywhere I travel to, especially third world countries,  I basically assume bad things can happen.

Different slant on the topic, but I have noticed that when among a group people from a particular country and I mention politics,  crime, the police and make criticisms of them, they will gang together and even if arguing amongst themselves, stop arguing, unite and attack me---the outsider.

Right now, the president of my wife's country has cracked down on drugs. In a few months, over 3500 people, people allegedly involved in the drug trade, have been killed in what's nicely called 'extra judicial' killings. The USA, the European Union, the United Nations and the Pope, to give a partial listing, have been critical of this practice.

Their president's response? He's called the USA president a "son of a whore", called the US ambassador the same, adding he's a gay son of a whore who meddled against him in the election. Dissed Secretary of State John Kerry too. He's told the European Union to "f__K off", while shown 'flipping them the bird.' Dismissed the United Nations as being useless. Said the USA military needs to leave the area where the Muslim terrorists are most active, to better reduce tensions and foster peace.

Honestly, he's got some good points, but I think that as the president and most visible representative  of a nation of over a 100 million people, he ought to present his views in a more, shall we say 'diplomatic' manner? I think when he's making such comments to the international media, he should also wear formal clothes, instead of looking like he just came from the gym. Might prove more attractive in getting foreign companies to set up business there too.

But he's cleaning up a lot of corruption, dealing with a drug epidemic and has a 97% approval rating from his people now, double the rating he had as one of several candidates running for the office.

There's a sort of logic there (I think) that 'the end justifies the means.' I remember as a teenager telling my full blooded Italian Grandmother how during WWII, as Hitler's ally and as Italy's leader, Benito Mussolini was a facist who tortured and killed many people and her replying: "but he made the trains run"--- meaning he got people working and things moving. I just grit my teeth and rolled my eyes.

What's funniest to me is that when I say to my own wife, who's as peaceful, well mannered, sweet and logical a woman as I've ever met, that her nation's president needs to present himself differently, she gets a bit upset and we just agree not to continue discussing it!

No wonder they say talking about politics and religion is never a good thing....

About a year and a half?

If my memory serves me correctly, both Calipro and I were busted about the same time for minor insults directed at the troll 'Bernard'. Bernard was banned BTW...

You know there's off topic and there's way off topic. It's crap like this that starts flames and ruins the forum. There must be a nice far right political forum out there you can yap on. This forum is about Latin American women.

According to Fathertime, and he should know since he is omnipotent, posters have been predicting the demise of Planet Love for the last three or four years.....Seems to be about a dozen of us left standing so I guess it finally came true. Dan finally got what´s coming to him, a dead forum that he helped kill.
Hopefully someone will start a new forum dedicated to the search for true love with a foreign girl and how to live the happily ever after.
Somebody turn the lights out. It´s been a good run. Time to move on.

It's too bad that you feel that way. A person with your years of experience in South America has a lot to offer here. Better to light a candle than curse the darkness, I figure. Not to say that this place doesn't get annoying at times.

But you've had some excellent insights. Your post on Dennis Levy back in May, 2012 was noble. Was Gloria and/or the 'authorities' ever able to find out more precisely exactly what happened? I enjoyed corresponding with Dennis, in fact when I hear about the NY Yankees baseball team, I still think about the guy. He was one of a kind, in a good way. He's missed for sure.

It is slow here these days. I have found that I like to debate so I spend more time on political forums. I have to say as far as Internet forums go this place is tame compared to what I have seen. Facebook has to be the most vicious. Just go to a public page and checkout the comments....wow! I cannot believe some folks use their real Facebook page and actually debate folks. It gets ugly and personal real quick.

I drop in here every now and then to see what is up but for the most part I keep the debating on the other forums that lend itself to debating. This topic is much more opinion oriented and dependent on someone's own experiences.

Does anyone look to marry a foreign woman anymore? It seems to me that is not a going thing anymore.

At least in Colombia, its just a piece of paper if you keep your money 100% outside of the country.

This is true Elexpat, especially for us old farts. But I remember a time when younger guys were looking for a lady to settle down with and have a family. It is still not a bad choice.

Marriage is a dying institution in many parts of the world. Marriage as a legal/religious institution in much of the world (especially in Europe) was a rarity up until the mid 1500's, with the Treaty/Council of Trent, 1545-1563, amongst other developments.

Now in some countries, most notably Scandanavian nations, living together and having children in a 'family way' isn't seen as abnormal. In other nations, ages at time of marriage have increased greatly, the number of children born has plummeted and more diapers are sold to the elderly than to infants.

On the otherhand, increasingly in the world, if a woman or a man can prove they've merely lived together for a long time, (generally two years in Colombia and seven years in many parts of the USA) the poorer party can be deemed legally entitled to a significant financial settlement once they've parted.

I'd say that overall, whether it be a legal and/or religious based 'marriage' or a recognized 'common law' marriage,  the legal trends continue to overly favor the woman, whether children are involved or not.

Just my opinion, but it's probably just a matter of time before women from foreign countries, who have the smarts and financial means, will be able to legally access an ex's USA based financial assets to 'win' a settlement upon parting, with the cooperation of our own legal system.

Why would you not want to get married again, if something happened to your marriage?  I would think if you enjoyed your current marriage, you would want to re create the situation?

A bit of rambling.

Over the last few years I've been to the Philippines a couple times to see a girl on each trip.  The last time I rented a nice villa on a hill overlooking the ocean on Boracay with a private pool.  spent about 8 days in Boracay, and then rented a nice apartment in Manila for a few days.  A pretty good time, but I've yet to go to the Philippines and not catch a cold.  That's a drag, and seriously cuts into the fun.  The two girls I've spent time with there were nice, but not enough of a connection to take to the next level.....

Since I live in San Diego, lately I've been going to Tijuana, for dinner (Villa Sevarios) and to meet friends.  There's some nice upscale areas in Tijuana, and the food is excellent.  Through networking and hanging out, I've met and dated some very beautiful girls in their 20s.  Girls studying at the University.  It's just good fun, and I'm not ever shocked when a little request for help for tuition comes up.   Hey I've been married, and now that is expensive.   So once in a while I've helped out, and I'm not delusional that these are superficial relationships not leading to marriage.   One girl I've been dating for over a year, and has been allot of fun.  Older guys contributing to younger girls tuition is nothing out of the ordinary down there.
Often the girls down there have had boyfriends that have treated them poorly, so they appreciate a guy that treats them well.  Tijuana is often associated with something sleazy, but that part of Tijuana is a very small part of the city.  The city is overflowing with beautiful normal girls going to college and working in their jobs.  I've never met anybody in Tijuana that wasn't respectful and friendly to me.

There are some very nice upscale Hotels in TJ that guys with money take their girlfriends for sex.  They are in respectable areas of town and are economical.  One is called the Mansion, and costs $26 for a regular room, and $44 for a Jacuzzi room.  It's not 5 star, but is every bit of 4 star.  You enter a through a gate with security guard, and pay without getting out of your car.  Then you drive to your room and drive into a separate one car garage that closes behind you.  You enter your suite through the garage.    Another nice Hotel is called the Hotel Premier.  Same prices as the Mansion, but also they have some suites with private indoor swimming pools, steam room, and flat screen TVs etc.  Cost about $120 bucks, up to $225 for the giant suite.

After my experiences in the last few years, I think the most important thing for a guy considering marriage is to make sure he has had all the sex with pretty girls he wants before he walks down the isle.  Regular sex clears the mind, and takes away the confusion between actually wanting to settle down, or just getting married because a guy hasn't gotten laid enough.  Go date some beautiful girls, buy some purses and jeans that they like.  Help out with their tuition once in a while, and be honest with yourself about the friendship.  It's mutual, casual, and just good fun.

So true. Getting laid on a regular basis does clear the mind. I think you've found yourself a much more practical arrangement than traveling to the PI or Colombia that's for sure!

JWR: I went to Tijuana for a weekend in May of this year. From my brief visit I liked what I saw (from a dating/girl perspective). I am in Los Angeles, not as close as you but certainly not far. Definitely could see trying to network and make that into a more regular spot to visit. What are some of the spots you go to meet ladies or how have you networked to meet ladies there?

I don't have any secrets other then I go down at least twice a week.  It's easy for me because I just hop on my motorcycle, and I'm in the zona rio in 35 minutes.  On my bike, the border wait is no more then 15 minutes when I come back.  I eat in the same restaurant regularly and they know me there.  Villa sefarios.  Just go down to the zona de gastronomica, and there's lots of restaurants, and bars.  At 52 I'm too old for the dance party scene.  I like a quiet place.  I have Mexican employees that work up here, and live in TJ.  I just ask the people I know down there if they know anybody single that wants to date.

I think maybe proximity and convenience is the key.  I go enjoy the food, and over time, I've made some connections.

If you go down and meet someone you like, ask them if they want to get a jacuzzi room and go relax.  It's different then the US, and things are more casual.

By the way JWR I talked to you on the phone 5 and a half years ago before taking my first trip to Colombia. The title of this thread is ironic because guys like you on this site helped me get a sense of perspective and avoid some pitfalls. I got a lot out of this site and still enjoy hearing from guys who've done the foreign marriage thing. Also it's good to hear you're enjoying life. Divorce is traumatic; my parents divorced and I hope never to go through it but credit to you for your resiliency and finding ways to have fun as a single 52 year old.
