Title: Colombian passports
Post by: mambocowboy on January 04, 2018, 11:22:20 AM
My wife became a US citizen in 2016 so we only brought her US passport. Big mistake. When we arrived in Colombia we were told she would have to provide her Colombian passport prior to leaving or face a penalty of 991 mil pesos (currently abot $340 dollars). So when I was checking our bags to leave Colombia, the ticket agent for Copa asked me if my wife had a Colombian passport and I said no, hoping that was the end of it. Well, it wasn't.  As we approached our flight gate, there was one more check point where they asked to see my wife's Colombian passport.  My wife acted surprised and insisted no one had told us aboout the law. The Colombian agent smiled and pointed to his computer screen, saying "but it says right here they told you when you entered two weeks ago." My wife didn't miss a beat and said "please sir, can't you help us?" Within about 30 seconds of my wife's continued pleading with him I passed him 40 US dollars and he wished us a good trip...

Nearly every country requires citizens of that country to enter with that country's passport. Canada started enforcing this requirement last year exempting only dual US-Canadian citizens from having a Canadian passport. I went ahead and got a Canadian passport anyway.

Having a Colombian passport has its uses. No need for a visa to enter Brazil and entry to Argentina without paying the entry fee (It has suspended the fee for US citizens but not Canadians). My three step kids and my wife all have up to date Colombian passports in addition to their US passports.

Just be thankful you didn't get pulled over by the police while you were there. Because they would have demanded her cedula....that would have been another 40 bucks.
