Escobar's Hitman.

Quote from the channel: "Published on 21 Apr 2017
It is not often that you get to meet a man who has personally taken more than 250 lives and was involved in the torture and murder of thousands more. It is even rarer to see such a man in broad daylight, in a city centre enjoying public adulation.

John Jairo Velásquez Vásquez, a.k.a. Popeye, is a local celebrity in Medellin, Colombia. In the 80s, the city was home to Pablo Escobar’s infamous, and extremely powerful, drug cartel. Popeye was the kingpin’s ‘hitman’.

The Medellin Cartel, which operated from the mid-1970s to early 1990s, reached its peak under Pablo Escobar when it became even more powerful than Colombia’s Government. It made tens of billions of dollars trafficking cocaine and committed tens of thousands of murders, many through terrorist attacks in Colombia. Pablo Escobar was named the richest and most powerful drug lord in the world.

Throughout his criminal career and on Escobar’s orders, Popeye kidnapped, tortured, killed and maimed. He planted bombs and terrorised thousands, from law enforcement officials to criminal competitors. Many innocent civilians became victims of the drug war as ‘collateral damage’. There are still people suffering long term consequences after the atrocities he and his accomplices committed; some were disabled, others bereaved.

Popeye, however, is unrepentant, adamant that he has paid his debt to society. After spending 23 years behind bars, he is now a free man. His criminal expertise lands him roles in popular television shows and films. Some, who were not personally affected by his crimes, treat him as a film star, others see him very differently."

26 years in prison - 365 x 26 = 9490 250 lives taken - 9490 / 250 = 37.96 37.96 days is what he got for taking a life.

is amazing how some people in medellin still revere escobar as a " good person" when he killed  a lot of people and ruined the moral  compass of the city.

Colombia's a bit different when it comes to forgiving murderers. Take a look sometime at the list of the world's most prolific, super sicko serial killers, guys who killed and tortured little children for fun.

The worst of the worst.

Colombia not only tops the list repeatedly, but it lets these deranged criminals out on parole, so they repeat their crimes. Some of them disappear and then repeat, but that doesn't matter, as it doesn't seem like there's much if any supervision of these killers after release anyhow. Unbelievable, but too true.

Not only Medellin. All over Colombia and other Latin countries also.

Like all those people that still worship Stalin, Hitler, Che Guevara, Pinochet
Strange people

Yeah, but if you are an expat living in Colombia, and you dont report your world-wide income to DIAN, you go directly to jail.
They know their priorities..

This 'popeye' guy's a braggert who's gotten off pretty light, getting early parole despite pretty bad behavior in prison and an additional 12 years having been added for other charges, after serving his initial sentence:

""Since 1992, Velasquez served a prison sentence on charges of terrorism, drug trafficking, conspiracy for terrorist purposes and murder.[3] However, despite the severity of his convictions, Colombia does not have capital punishment and the maximum sentence is thirty years. During 2000 and 2001, Popeye was involved in armed clashes in La Modelo prison. In 2008, he was sentenced to twelve years for other judicial proceedings against him. On August 22, 2014 he would have received probation for having served three-fifths of his sentence, but as he is involved in other legal processes and investigations, probation would not be obtained. Nonetheless, he was released on August 26, 2014."""

But in Colombia, that's just 'par' for the course. While you might argue that a lot of popeye's victims 'had it coming'--- the three Colombian guys who've murdered more people than anybody else in world history, certainly including popeye, mostly targeted children for rape, torture and murder and repeatedly got light sentences, allowing them to kill again.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_serial_killers_by_number_of_victims

'The 'top' three spots for serial killers goes to Colombia. Brazil only come in 4th. Hard to pin down an exact number, but 300 victims each is easily plausible.

#1, Luis Garavito, was initially given 40 years, but the soft hearted justice system reduced it to 22, because he helped the 'authorities' find where he disposed of some of his victims. He's lolly coddled in prison and should be out on the street in a few years, for 'good behavior'. Maybe he'll turn his celebrity into cash too, or more characteristically, kill again.

#2: Pedro Lopez, another Colombian guy who loved to rape, torture and kill young children, got 15 years and was released. They're not sure where he is now, but he's out there.

In the USA, bank robbery is a federal crime and  typically 15 years (no parole, early release, at it's a fed. crime) is considered light. 25 years is common. Stupid, stupid crime. You've probably carried US paper money, cash with bright magenta red on the edges---it's actually quite common. That's from the exploding dye packs that almost always explode in the getaway car, blinding the inhabitants, making it impossible to drive, while blistering their skin. Dumb, dumb crime. Besides, they rarely get much money out of the bank to start with.

#3: Daniel Camargo-- same style, imprisoned for raping and murdering young girls on several occasions, jailed and released several times. He finally got 25 years and somebody killed him in jail. Otherwise, he was scheduled to be released several years ago.

Such a big hearted, forgiving part of the world!  :o
