can my wife get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number ???
« on: September 09, 2011, 10:34:32 AM »
does anyone here know anything about getting a   IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number ?
here is the link
i heard something about this the other day on the radio
& i see one of the boxes you can check is
"spouse of a U.S. citizen/resident alien"does anyone know anything about this because it's all new to me  ??? . I know my wife can get a SS# once she has been here a couple of weeks however for her credential accreditation they are going to want a # for her  (normally a SS#) & due to the fact that the timing mite be off her credential review paperwork mite be sent back & then we would have to start it all over again. I'm not trying to break any laws just figure out how i can make the state nursing board, immigration, & the Philippine nursing board all happy all at the same time. thanks for any input piglett

Piglett - stop & breathe.
ITINs are for federal tax reporting only, and are not intended to serve any other purpose.

About 2 weeks after your wife comes to the US, take her down to the SS office with her passport /visa  (she need to show Evidence of Immigration status), applications & other required documents and apply for her SS card. Note, once she is in the system they can process her application -  you do not have to wait for GC to arrive in the mail. It do not take that long to process & get a SS card.

You cannot make them all happy at the same time - it is a step by step process.  ;)

And Piglett, stop listening to the radio.  ::)

Pig,

Just wait until she gets here and gets her SSN. If they want an SSN, then give them an SSN, not an ITIN.

A few years back when my wife was waiting for her visa, I looked into the ITIN for filing a joint income tax return and it was a complete pain in the arse. I think they have made it a little easier since then but it is still a hassle.

I would forget about the nursing license/exam for now and concentrate all of your efforts towards getting her visa and getting her over here. The rest you can take care of later.

well here is the deal guys . her credential review will be done in a couple more months once that happens i think she has 30 days to provice a SS# & if she doesn't the whole deal is done. once she does get a SS# she has to start the whole credential review process over again which takes another 6 months  :( so i figured if she had a ITIN if all else failed she could give them what # she did have. now it's not perfect however it's the best i have come up with at this point.

I'll also give an update here for her visa
there are a couple of mistakes on the DS230 that she filled out while i was in the PI with her.I'll correct it the next time we chat & then i think it will be ready to send in.

thanks guys

Piggy that is not why you got the headbonks.

Did you review the forms while you were in the PI?

Also are any of the correction being made on page 2?
If so then that is the page she have to sign - meaning SHE would have to make the correction (s), then sign AND mail the form (s) to you.

Did you take Ray's advice and had her sign blank copies of any needed forms while you were there?

A friend Dolly in California? Is that friend an immigration lawyer?

When I filed the CR-1, I did my research, I asked question, got familiarize with the process &  found out what was needed AND collected all the needed documents (we both had an extra original set of documents just in case one of the departments "misplace the one (s) that were sent). The filings were between me and my wife - all the so called "experts" (family members/friends, etc,.) were shut out/kept in the dark as to the filing process.

No i didn't & i don't recall him ever saying that  ::) ::) ::)

He did not say it directly to you but I remember Ray, Capstone & someone else (may have been William 3rd) all saying a few times in different thread to "print blank copies and have the wife/fiance sign them in ink".
That advice should not take just by the person (s) it was directed to at the moment BUT by anyone who is going down or planning to go down that route.

Personally, I find the DS-230 to be a straightforward & easy form.

Dolly is Marily's friend from school & she is a Pinay too & she already has her greencard. yes Dolly may be off base, (probably is) however now that this roadblock has showed up i can't go any further till i get to the bottom of this. i learned about this last week but when my wife had her 1 day off i came home dog tired & i knew i had a double shift to work the next day so i told her i was going to bed & i couldn't chat with her that week. i will have to see what day she gets off this week & i will see what in the hell Dolly is talking to her about.

OK so i didn't catch that
i don't read every thread from start to finish. there are times when I'm just not into one so i just stop reading it early on, therefore i mite miss end up missing information that gets brought up later on down the line. please forgive me farther for i have sinned  :'( :P :'(

i do too & it all looked good to me when we were making it out. infact it still looks good  :)
