Cheapest flights to Colombia?

I'm trying to do some planning for a future visit to Colombia (Cali is the current target) but the flights seem ridiculous. I've tried different search engines, flying out of AUS/DAL/IAH to Cali or Bogota, different dates/days of the week and I'm still unable to get anything under $750. I searched here for flight discussions and saw several people mention flights in the $500 range, just wondering what magical combination of airports/dates you used to get one that low.

I take it AUS is Austin. $750 sounds like a good deal to me. Coming from the west coast my 2 trips to Colombia were more like $900 to $1,000.

I hear ya. I'll take $750 over $1000 obviously, but I'd love to find a cheap and repeatable source for $500 tickets.

lol, I started mesing around with dates after I posted this and found a 1 stop flight on Jet Blue from Austin to Medellin for $523. Too bad I don't want to go to Medellin. There's also a flight to BQ for $670. Nothing cheap for Cali or nearby though.

Yeah, I just checked and last year I paid just over $1,000 to go to Cali.  I purchased it 3 or 4 weeks in advance. The route there was Los Angeles to MIA/Bogota/Cali. I think the way back was Cali/Bogota/Houston/LA.

The guys with wives from Colombia can probably give better tips on how to find cheap fares.  Cartagena, Bogota and Medellin are cheaper to get to than Cali....I assume simply b/c the volume of flights to and from the others is simply that much greater. Good luck.

sometimes you will get a better rate if you book inside colombia, like  americanairlines.com.co

I've found the best fares on Kayak.com….Usually cheaper than booking directly with the airline for the same flight, which doesn't make sense.

Sometimes some airlines did not publish their lowest fare on their web site for a particular route - they reserve (via agreements) certain low fare buckets for either travel agencies or via telephone.
 
I have gotten a few flight low bucket fares (which earn points) by calling the airline directly - fares that were not on their web site or search engine.

Depends on WHEN you are going there.   In my experience from London, ENGLAND, the most expensive months of the year had been between June to end of August - almost double !!!

AUS - BOG (return) 17th June and return 24th June, on  united airline, only £422 which is about $675

I booked a flight for June about 3 weeks ago and now it's pricing nearly $300 less

I noticed that flights get more pricey from June to early September....I recently bought tickets and avoided that time frame and scored them for a low price.  This was out of LAX.
